Las time I was in Russia it was actually Soviet Union, but I believe nowadays $1000 can get you a week of stay / food in Moscow style at max.

Not for too much actually. Almost everything (cars, clothing, electronics etc) is more expensive here than in the Sates or the EU. That's why Russians do shopping tours to those countries. The food prices (if it's a local product) are similar to the ones in the USA (+/-). The gasoline is much cheaper in USD after the financial crisis. Now it's about $0,7 USD for a liter (~$2.6 USD for a gallon). You can spend $1000 USD to rent 2 or even 3 bedroom apartments in Moscow for a month. Not luxury ones, of course - no pool, no security and no underground garage/parking for that money. $1000 is the money I and my wife are usually spend to buy food and pay for utilities during one month - we are working at home, so we are eating at home too.

klinton 04-04-2017 12:59 PM

seems quite high...with 1000 bucks (with current eur/usd rate) I could live in Barcelona for whole month as a single...easily...
how much of that 1000 usd you spend on things like rum, wine, rakija, vodka, beer? :winkwink::winkwink::winkwink:

Barcelona is not expensive place at all. Cheap food, cheap taxi service, cheap apartments etc (BTW, I really love Barcelona). Say it's possible to buy a house in a beach zone for as low as 100K-200K euros only (a price of Khrushchyovka apartments in Moscow). This is very cheap, to be honest. Just for a comparison. A friend of mine sells his house, which is 4 km away from Moscow for 7 million dollars. No sea here, 9 months a year are cold, rainy and snowy.

about taxi in BCN, I dont know. Prolly not that cheap as guys charge western salaries :)
Barcelona is one of the most expensive cities in "Spain"...Yet, like you said - it doesnt have to be expensive :)
Well, real estate prices in Moscow are frightening, but this is what you get when you have 1-2 places (Moscow is one of them) in a country of 140 mln people where you can actually develop yourself and your career...just like London in England, I guess...(almost, as british villages and small towns look rather different than russian ones:winkwink::winkwink::winkwink:)
so all the population goes there and needs to live somewhere....

When I've been there a few years ago it was very cheap in comparison to Moscow (even my lovely "Don Tomas" cigars were 3x times cheaper than here :)). Perhaps the cost of living has changed there dramatically since then...

Outside of 2 major cities Moscow and St. Pete 1K is not that bad and somehow people do survive. Even in Moscow you probably can but will have to hassle a lot. People use public transportation a lot and there are lots of affordable places with in 40 min ride outside of Moscow. The 7 million house is not any different than finding house like that outside NYC in East Hamptons vs regular shack in Brooklyn. CyberSEO goes to extreme as usual and likes to present this as every day life of regular Russian citizen. Its not. Look up any city on our map and google its everyday life and scenery. Very gray and just like everywhere else its work, kids, dinner, sleep.

Bladewire 04-04-2017 03:58 PM

This American in Moscow gives you all the tricks. Russians LOVE him. He was even on Russian news!

mamaliga 04-04-2017 04:05 PM

Moscow is indeed a very expensive city. Someone wrote above the booking.com website, instead of renting a flat appartment you can go cheapest by chosing a hostel. There are offers starting from 5 EUR per night.
On the other side, hookers , massage parlors and night-clubs are way to expensive compare with the food, can go broke in the second day with 1k budget. There are options for the food as well, go to a store buy pashtet with bread and eat all day. Wont cost you more than 2 dollars.

Since most products in Russia are imported (food, clothes, appliances etc), the cost in USD will be the same. The renting prices and services became cheaper of course, but not that much as a difference between 56 and 33.

Do you want to know prices on local whores? Here you go:

https://www.intimcity.nl/ - all prices are in RUB.
https://www.dosug.cz/en/d/ - another site in English, but prices are in RUB too.

Since you don't like women, you may go directly to the transsexual section: https://www.dosug.cz/en/d/part/5 ;)

Go figure how much $1,000 (56,000 RUB) is.

P.S. The OP asks about Russia, but I believe he is interested in Moscow and Spb prices. I don't think someone here will like to visit Vlogda, Novosibirsk, Nizhnevartovsk or Uryupinsk...
