Best rock bands by decade?
I saw this list of "best rock bands by decade" on another site. I think it's pretty good with a few exceptions. I noticed Stone Temple Pilots missing from the 90s, a band I would have near the top of that decade.
What are you thoughts? 1960's The Beatles The Doors The Rolling Stones The Jimi Hendrix Experience The Velvet Underground Cream The Zombies The Beach Boys The Animals The Kinks HM: Creedance Clearwater Revival 1970's Led Zeppelin Queen Rush Pink Floyd The Who Heart Deep Purple Grateful Dead Yes HM: Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, Genesis 1980's Guns N' Roses Metallica A-Ha The Cure Iron Maiden AC/DC Aerosmith Pixies Duran Duran U2 HM: Bon Jovi , Van Halen, REM, The Smiths, Motley Crue, Poison 1990's Nirvana Green Day Pearl Jam Alice in Chains The Smashing Pumpkins Red Hot Chili Peppers Soundgarden Nine Inch Nails Weezer Mighty Mighty Bosstones HM: Too many. 2000's My Chemical Romance Blink 182 The White Stripes Radiohead The Killers Yeah Yeah Yeahs Coldplay 30 Seconds to Mars Foo Fighters Arctic Monkeys HM: Linkin Park |
1980's -
Van Halen deserves more than honorable mention. Very influential band. Why is A-ha on the list? They were a one hit wonder. Def Leppard should probably be on it. Sold a shit tom of albums. 1990's - Blues Traveler should be on the list. Spearheaded the jam band scene of the 90's. Have since been ostracized from the scene for the unpardonable sin of having a hit record. |
I know, I noticed A-Ha on there too and laughed. Maybe someone put it in there as a joke.

Radiohead were big in the 90's, they have been all but dead since 2000 since they tried to be 'different'
my chemical romance = vomit (i know, i saw them live) |
1900-2020 Nickelback.

Do you realize how influential and important Sabbath is? Maybe just as much, or even more than Zeppelin. But I definitely agree the 90's is great. |
What no Loverboy?

For the 60's you need to add:
Byrds Yardbirds Buffalo Springfield Jefferson Airplane Mothers of Invention (70'S too) Fleetwood Mac - Peter Green Era Traffic You have the Kinks in the 60's but they need to go into the 70's and 80's too. You have the Who and the Dead in the 70's but they need to be in the 60's too. For the 70's you need to add: CSN&Y Fleetwood Mac - Nicks, Buckingham Era Just imho of course. . |
These should be added:
60's-70's Moody Blues 80's Journey Agreed that Black Sabbath and Van Halen deserve more than honorable mention. |

Kind of like Smashing Pumpkins during and post Meloncollie and the Infinite Sadness. Once they moved away from the low end, crunchy riffs and got more experimental that was the beginning of the end. Yes, they were around many years but released nothing which could match Gish or Siamese dream as just good, pure rock. It was so sad to watch it happen and I'm still waiting for them to get back to their roots of basically rocking my ass off. When it comes to radiohead, they got too far away from straightforward song writing and became just plain....weird. There's flashes of that early vibe here and there in the newer stuff, but it's largely inaccessible for me. But I'm not crazy about seeing my favorite bands evolve too much. That's just me. I was loving the new Metallica album because I feel like they lost their balls with the black album in the early 90's (post And Justice for All), and have been nutless ever since. Hardwired was as close to Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning as I've heard in years, and they could gone ever further with it. |

I have always loved Metallica. And Justice for All is one of my favorite records. I am one of those people who really liked the black album, but it was different and "softer." Hardwired is fantastic. It is them returning to what they once did and worrying less about writing songs that can get on the radio. I saw them live with Guns N Roses, one of the best concerts I have ever been to. |
Agree with your top choices for the 19's decades.
2000's is when the decadence and decay set in (deliberately), so there's no right answer. I liked a few Deftones songs though, especially the stripper one |

I'm the same way with The Flaming Lips. Anything accessible and conventional from them is some of my favorite music, but 80% of their work I can do without. |
Ever know about band during their era, maybe hear some of their stuff and not think much of it? Then you re-discover and appreciate them years later? I've been loving 90's band Local H lately. Almost 20 years later they're still going.
Goddamn I love this song |

okay now I'm running into some bands on Youtube that bring back 90's memories.
Sorry, but this is a Creed, Limp Bizkit and Korn free zone. |

I miss Scott Weiland (for all his faults). I think there was no other front man like him and rates right up there with Freddie Mercury. The STP shows I saw were incredible, and for me they were easily top 5 for the 1990's.
