Interesting comment. I had a friend trapped in the Superdome during Katrina and he pretty much said the same thing.
Quote:
No one is arguing that people of any race can ?suck? (particularly insurance companies), it speaks to a person?s innate integrity, or lack thereof. I think what right-leaning folks object to is both the the scope and frequency of dysfunctional, violent behavior from one certain race in particular. If you read the essays written by whites stranded at the Superdome and elsewhere in the city, you?ll learn about disgusting, barbaric behavior that makes ?price-gauging contractors? look like choirboys.
Case in point: A restaurant chef stranded in NOLA described how he and a handful of whites had to stick closely together night after night, right next to the National Guard station, for fear of getting attacked from blacks who looted every single suite and store in the Dome, stole and drank all the liquor, and destroyed anything and everything else, just for the sake of destruction. Other people were beaten to death or raped; people smoked crack openly.
Without a care for the truly sick and desperate among them, blacks looted lower floors of hospitals of food and medical supplies while terrified patients and staff were barricaded in the upper floors. They pushed their own sick and elderly out of the way, on the ground, leaving them to die; they let their babies wander around alone, barefoot and naked among the rivers of raw sewage. The locals who ventured out on Day 2 quickly came back with weapons and crack, shooting at rescue choppers and getting high. A few clever capitalists DID loot stores for diapers and water?then tried to sell them at outrageous prices to others who were suffering and desperate, too.
No one with an ounce of intellectual honesty could claim that, had the majority of the folks been white, the behavior would have been the same. No way. Even poor whites (as some of them were) don?t devolve into savages, at least not in less than a week?s time. We might see Zombie Apocalypse-style savagery months after a disaster, but good Lord, not the first few days!
One National Guardsman who had recently returned from Afghanistan noticed one big difference between Afghanistan and NOLA: ?at least the Afghanis wanted to help themselves, but the people of New Orleans only wanted others to help them?. That attitude: the sullen resentment, the violence, the entitlement, the lack of gratitude and ?You-owe-ME? mentality? sums up why many whites are sick of it, sick of them. As another Guardsman summed up, ?Who wants to go rescue someone who?s just going to turn around and stab you in the back??
