I know countless people that carry knives. That use them daily. That have never killed someone.

In the UK not only knives are banned from being carried in public but self defense in general is banned. You can't even carry a paper spray.
If you are an average-built woman I guess you either run or beg your attacker to leave you alone.

as much as I have little or no time for politicians, he has fucked up slightly by assuming everyone knows the context in which he is using 'knives'. He doesn't mean butter knives, he doesn't mean knives in your tackle box when fishing, or knives in your pocket at work, he means flick knives, switchblades, butterfly knives, butcher's knives while walking the streets, and so on.

^ Not to be taken as in any way standing up for him, just getting people off the wrong context as that's a side issue of him fucking up and not being clear - probably cos it's character limited by twitter (and why politicians shouldn't use it).

Carrying a knife in public in Australia is illegal as well, pre internet I was a chef and spent time working in King Cross here in Sydney which was the local sleaze street, after work I'd always get legless drunk and head home, several times I was checked by cops.

If you have a story that adds up.. I'm a Chef, finished work, got smashed and now trying to get a cab to go home, and that's backed up cos you smell like a deep fryer, are wearing chequer pants and the knife is wrapped in a dirty chef jacket, its no issues, get home safe mate.

If your with a group of young thugs looking like your looking for trouble and you get checked and they find a knife, tucked in your boot say, then sure you have some questions to answer.

My wife had a knife on a train yesterday. It was a child's knife and she used it for cutting grapes. Stainless steel but about as harmless as a set of pliers that recently got confiscated.
