I have a friend of mine who couldn't find a decent job to save his life. Money was so tight for them. He started driving, entry level position job was $80k with no experience other than truck driving school. A few years later he is making almost twice that, and a company in Texas paid for him to move out there...

No one is worried about self driving that I know of.. It's something that is very far off. At best maybe some city to city regional runs but will still need drivers once they get off the highway.
The biggest reason most people leave is because they can't stand being away from home. If you run hard like I do and don't go home a lot you can do 6 figures. The problem is most guys want to run home every 2 weeks and then they are lucky to make $50-60k so at that point it's not worth being away from home.
For myself, I don't do it long term.. I'm running till end of year then I turn my lease truck in and go vacation for 6 months or so. Maybe I go back, maybe I go do ebay/amazon again.. I just like having different options and with Trucking it's something I can leave then go back to at anytime and I wanted a break from the ebay stuff for a bit so I took a year off of that. That's kinda my thing, I like income sources I can start or stop when ever I like so I can go do other stuff.
