Happy Kwanzaa
 

Happy Kwanzaa to all who celebrate it. Black Christmas aka “Kwanzaa is a celebration held in the United States and in other nations of the African diaspora in the Americas and lasts a week. The celebration honors African heritage in African-American culture and is observed from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a feast and gift-giving. Kwanzaa has seven core principles”.

Funny story: last week a CNA friend came in and said, “Lecy says Happy Kwanzaa.” I looked at her in the eye, all serious, and said, “I’m not black.” She looked at me strangely and I said, “Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday.”

“Oh, I meant Hanukkah.”

We lost it. I literally laughed for hours as they did! Now she renamed me Kwanzaa and the other woman does the same.

Told my Scrabble team and they laughed so much we had to take a break!

I’ve been to one Kwanzaa celebration at the Bethel AME House of Celebration. Thirty years ago my b3st friend went there for church as she was Cape Verdean and Bethel welcomes all denominations and religions. Every race and color was there and prayers were “to our religious leader” instead of he/she, god, Jesus, etc.
