Trump supporter found guilty of threatening to kill Maxine Waters, Obama
A jury today found a Syracuse man guilty of threatening to kill California Congresswoman Maxine Waters and former President Barack Obama.
The jury convicted Stephen Taubert, 51, after a three-day trial before U.S. District Court Chief Judge Glenn Suddaby. Taubert now faces up to 20 years in prison, prosecutors said.
Taubert was convicted of three charges, threatening to assault a federal official, making threats against a former president and using interstate commerce to make a threat.
The charges stemmed from a series of phone calls he made to Congressional offices in 2017 and 2018.
In 2018, Taubert called Waters’ office and told an official who answered the phone that he was going to kill the congresswoman and every member of her staff. In 2017, Taubert called the office of former Sen. Al Franken and said he was going to “hang” Obama.
In both calls, he used racial slurs and “vile” language, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a press release. Members of the offices testified at trial and recordings of the calls were played to the jury.
The jury concluded Taubert had selected his victims because of their race, prosecutors said in the press release. That means the judge can consider Taubert’s offenses to be hate crimes at sentencing. Taubert is due to be sentenced in July. |
