My two cents on improving GFY
 

I heard GFY was under new ownership. Used to post here from time to time, but haven't since this place went properly downhill. Figured if there were new people in charge, it might be worth giving a little advice on how to 'fix' Go Fuck Yourself and make it a better place for the adult business.

Here are some really key things that I think made people frequent GFY less often.

Restructure Boards

Currently, Fucking Around & Program Discussion has around 80% of all posts, ever, on GFY. There are close to 1 million threads here - that's a lot! This section should be devoted exclusively to discussions about adult entertainment, affiliate marketing, business news, legal stuff and whatever else. Basically, stuff related to our industry. New models? Sure. Mindgeek got purchased by a multinational? Absolutely. Advice on how to deal with a tricky situation? You bet! Affiliate program recommendations, calling out other people (with evidence) and whatever else should be allowed (Paxum bashing included). This should be broad.

What shouldn't be here? Politics, conspiracy theories, general global news (unrelated to porn) and whatever else. When I come to Fucking Around & Program Discussion, I want to talk about the ADULT INDUSTRY. I don't want to see dumb threads that no one cares about and people just pad their post counts with for signature spam. Let's do this properly: here's a breakdown of the 'new' forum based on these rules, from how FA&PD currently looks:

Green is welcome, red is not. I'm not saying that the red threads need to go off of GFY - they just need their own section. I'm here on a forum about the porn business because that's what I care about discussing. If I wanted to talk politics or conspiracy theories, I'd go to Reddit, or Infowars, or whatever. GFY is NEVER going to become a premiere place to talk about these topics! Look at the sheer amount of dumb politics and conspiracy garbage that's here, man. Not only is it completely unrelated to pornography, it's factually incorrect nonsense! It brings zero value to the forum: literally none.

There is no difference between your typical wehateporn thread and some spammer coming here to put up a garbage word salad post about Viagra and linking to a website for 'SEO'. Don't mix these two types of threads. It's like me going to a blog about sexy Asian chicks and between each broad, there's 3-4 pictures of trains, or the milky way, or whatever. Okay, rant over: there needs to be a new forum where the shit threads go, so THIS area can be devoted entirely to discussing business.

User blocks affect board indexes

This one is simple: if I block someone, it should apply to archive pages. I only have a few people blocked here, but when they make new threads, I see them in the listings - this shouldn't happen. They don't appear anywhere on the site for me. Small change, big impact: also make it easier for users to block one another. Right next to 'report post' should be 'block this user'. I have to jump through hoops in order to do this, which sucks.

Ease up on 'freeloading' business posts

I appreciate that GFY has to retain some value from advertising, but allow people to be more free in what they post with regard to advertising. Keep the sell/buy forums, but if someone posts something here that might've gotten them warned in the past, let it go. Egregious cases can be moved to the other forums, but let people network. The adult industry isn't as profitable as it once was, so the allure and ease of getting cash has shifted heavily in the last 10 years. I remember there were some pretty strict posting conditions here - those should be dropped somewhat.

This can obviously be refined and changed over the months and years. I just feel like it'd be nicer if business posts were supported, rather than frowned upon.

Work toward limiting +1 posts

There's a big problem of some people posting here and just writing a few words that mean absolutely nothing. I'm presuming this is done just to raise post counts for whatever reason. This should be heavily discouraged - I don't have a solution here, but it's the same issue with the threads in general. The great thing about portals like Reddit is that constructive comments go to the top, whereas spam goes to the bottom - I don't have to see it, since it only takes a few people to make the trash go away. This isn't the case on GFY, where entire threads can be filled with sig spammers and other bullshit that doesn't add to the conversation.

Okay, those are my thoughts on the current issues that GFY has. There are probably more, but these are the main ones. The first one is the most important. DO NOT MIX BUSINESS WITH CONSPIRACY THEORIES AND POLITICS. There are like, 10 people here who want that: those guys aren't going to make GFY a good community again.

First of all, ain't nobody making sig money. They ain't doing it for post count lol. Brass the only dude left trying to sell his. It's been on the market for years.

Fact is, the industry moved on without this place. This shit needs a complete rebranding into a political forum.

This IS the place for these sorts of posts to go. The FUCKING AROUND section of the board - The clue is in the name...

If you want to talk pure business you have ELEVEN other sections of this board, which are 100% business, zero politics, zero conspiracy theories, just business that you can go and post in...

But they are not busy enough, I hear you cry... Exactly...

The "fucking around" is just that - fucking around. It's anything goes. And since day one it's been the most pouplar section.

I would love to see a political section. In fact, I would love to see new sections for a number of things - politics and cars, for example.

I also fully believe that GFY needs to become a "general" board. Keep a section for webmasters, but start sections for politics, Europe, cars, legal stuff, space stuff, tech stuff, and then a forum for porn in general.

Easy peasy.

Ignore is for pussies, unless you're ignoring Blaidwire. That I can understand.

It’s funny, he should try try starting a forum using his forumla, see how it works out. So many boards have shut down through not understanding the most basic principles of how to keep posters returning.

So you have all the alternative sections you asked for already. Maybe this is the time to bring a few of them together into less sections.

One key feature this board is missing is the shadow ban feature.

Basically, when somebody is shadowbanned, they use the forum just like everyone else. The only difference is nobody can else can see their posts. You could make it so that 25% to 0% of their posts are seen by other members.

This would give the impression to the trolls that nobody is listening to them and they would just leave because no attention = no feeding the trolls.

Shadow bans can be temporary or permanent. Either way, its better than banning someone like we currently do. That just makes them come back with new fake nicks and start all over.

It would solve a huge issue of some of the psychos that come on here to chain spam their crazy ramblings. Same goes for all the racist bs being posted.

I think people with real business posts should easily be able to pin their business posts in the fucking around section. This will solve a lot of issues.

This way when you enter the fucking around section all you'll see at the top of the section is business posts and then the fucking around is at the bottom, this gives priority to business threads in the fucking around and program discussion section. :thumbsup

Notice, via your screen cap, that if you take the "fucking around" out of the "fucking around and program discussion" section that you're only keeping 7 of 27 posts, that's a loss of 74% of threads, and if you count the posts in the threads you're losing 98% of interaction for the section.

I agree with all your suggestions, they are excellent ideas. I'm happy to comply with whatever changes happen.

It also has a "retard" feature where it can slow down GFY for certain people and make it super slow just to annoy them.

The purpose of ignore is to remove interaction with people. I won't interact with anyone who tries to bypass the feature.

It being the most popular section is the reason why it needs a change in direction. People come to this board because it has been the most popular for over a dozen years. It used to be populated with adult-related stuff. Just check this screenshot from 2007:

Look at how many posts are talking about the business, and if they're not, they're talking about something semi-business related, such as investing or whatever. The current state of GFY has VERY few business threads: it's overran by incredibly lacklustre submissions.

To the other replies:

'Fucking Around' has been in the title of this forum for like, 15+ years. It's okay to make a change once every 15 years and say 'hey, maybe this should be adult-related business general discussion'. Again: take your conspiracy theories and whatever, I don't mind. Just remove them from the only forum people bother to visit.

What if we pin links to the top five of those forums to the top of the fucking around section?

Then what if we give the ability for all business-related threads to be pinned by the posters to the top of the forum under those 5 links?

That way, in the fucking around section the first thing people see is the top 5 other sections to post in and business threads and then under those pins are all the fucking around threads.

What do you think?

I think that would be fine - Likewise my old idea of symlinks to new topics in the other sections meaning they appear amongst the main forum posts would be fine as well.

Or alternatively, people could just go to the other sections? I personally think it's ridiculous and juvenile to complain that there are not enough business threads in THIS section, when technically, those business threads actually belong elsewhere anyway. :2 cents:

Even if they were to split this forum in 2, and made "Fucking Around" seperate from "Program Discussion' everyone would just stay in the fucking around section and the program discussion forum would be just as dead and inactive as the other 11 sections (Except perhaps "Webmaster Q & A") are at the moment...

It's almost like saying that the posts he wants to read are not in THIS section, and he refuses to go to any of the other sections, because he expects them to be here instead... Alternatively, as suggested above in this thread, the OP can always start his own forum and put whatever rules he likes in place until his heart's content... :2 cents:

that is a weird word to use... i was hired as a freelancer from one of the biggest adult sites online. last week. im not even sure they post here. they are a member though

Dumb threads are fine. Its the fucking around section after all. The bigger problem is most threads, even business threads, get derailed by the same people over and over again. Its nearly impossible to have a serious conversation without having a mouth-breather flood the thread with stupidity

Fine get rid of all that stuff I'm just down to nurture the newbies to the adult industry again can we get on with this already? This is the real problem. People like BW and all the similar posters who keep replying to the posts from BW, such as Redfred, Busty, etc have slowly filled up the board with nonsense. Even decent political debate is ignored in favour of the lunatic ideals. They have been allowed to get away with it for far too long.

The debate of whether the main board should be devoted to business and the fucking around to a sub section is foolish. All it will achieve is the sub section becomes the main board. People are no longer sharing advice, no longer promoting sites, services, etc, looking for affiliates here. Social media is a better place.

Someone missed the entire argument and wants to focus on a 20-year old decision to include 'fucking around' in a forum board name. Besides, it's 'fucking around' now: that doesn't mean it cannot be changed (and it ought to be).

A small amount of fucking around is fine, a large amount of fucking around completely dilutes the value of the board as being for adult webmasters.
