Can you type without watching the keyboard?

I do this all the time, can type anything no matter how complex it, dont even need good light in background.

Tho, i wish i could have same skill for something more useful, like playing guitar or piano lol

not all all, I always wanted an app that would 'ghost' a key board over the screen with an opacity setting :(

Rochard 02-05-2020 11:31 AM

I took a typing class in the 1980s on a... electric typewriter. I've been working on computers ever since.

I never have to look at the keyboard. In fact, all keyboards have little notches on the f and j buttons so you can center yourself properly on the keyboard as needed.

My main PC has a Alienware mechanical keyboard on it. Old school, net. My other PC has a cheap Microsoft keyboard on it, easy enough. My laptop is a Microsoft Surface, which is an entirely different feel but still easy enough.

gorillaz_ 02-05-2020 11:43 AM

of course all the time , btw it's not sophisticated .

i have new touchpad that jump when i use it , this what i dislike about my keyboard .

ruff 02-05-2020 12:38 PM

I learned to type in the 8th grade without letters or numerals on the keyboard. At the time I thought how useless is this particular skill. Who knew?

fuzebox 02-05-2020 12:41 PM

Isn't that what typing is?

Denny 02-05-2020 12:53 PM

My wife is always marveled when I keep typing an email reply for paragraphs while looking and talking to her without skipping a beat.

Wizzo 02-05-2020 01:03 PM

I can, as long as I don't think about it. Once I start thinking about it, it's like I totally forget how to type...lol :pimp

Brian mike 02-05-2020 01:09 PM

I learned it with this https://www.taptouche.com/fr many years ago :), its in french (my mother language) .
Never feel i was a fast or perfect Type/writer but that did help at first.

Years ago while I was in college I applied for a job at a AAA call center. The first test was a typing test. They gave you a computer with Microsoft Word, and two pages typed on paper. You had to copy the paper over to the computer. You had three minutes to see how many words you could type. You had three tries.

Towards the end of the first try I hit CTRL+A and then CTRL+C. Woman came in and used MS word to see how many words I typed and said "Oh, you did good" and then "try again" after clearing the screen.

Hit CTRL+P and started just where I left off...

I was the only one who ever completed the two pages in the alloted time. When they asked me about it I told them what I did (I am brutally honest) and they told me I had cheated. LOL.

RyuLion 02-05-2020 04:32 PM

Yes, ever since high school.

King Mark 02-05-2020 04:56 PM

Nope. When it was Mavis Beacon time in school, I usually just found a girl to fuck off with somewhere else.

And I still type faster than all of them. I type fast as fuck with just 2 fingers and just kind of glance at the keyboard while doing it.

This touch screen shit tho.... If it wasn't for autocorrect it would probably take me hours to type this post.

CaptainHowdy 02-05-2020 04:58 PM

Nope . . .

Did you get the job tho?

lock 02-05-2020 06:44 PM

No never really picked up typing skills.

Jazzix 02-05-2020 06:46 PM

Nope. One finger on each hand.

Typing was an option in high school and in later years wished I had taken it.

They are never heard of em guitar strings .. "These nickel wound strings deliver crisp highs, aggressive mids, and a focused low end for dynamic lead work and chords that ring out clearly whether clean or heavily distorted. " Quoted from Amazon

george MH 02-06-2020 12:15 PM

copying skills into many places in life :1orglaugh
that is impressive :thumbsup

PornDiscounts-V 02-07-2020 12:55 PM

Only have to look when typing in a Windows key.

NatalieMojoHost 02-10-2020 08:03 AM

Yep, in 2 different alphabets.

TheLegacy 02-10-2020 08:18 AM

I grew up without computers and only used electric typewriters that were a mandatory class in high school - so we had to learn to do it without looking. That has always stayed with me. Think the better question is - how many words per min can you type

Forkbeard 02-10-2020 11:32 AM

Yeah, to people who grew up before computers, "type without looking at the keyboard" is what typing is. Poking at the keys while looking at them was called "hunt and peck" (like a chicken).

As others in this thread have mentioned, serious typing-class typewriters didn't have anything to look at on the keys. You could buy sets of blank white plastic key covers to snap over the keys of your typewriter so it could properly be used to teach typing.

There was a thing called a "copy stand" made out of steel that sat beside your typewriter. People who typed for a living were inevitably typing from paper copy, whether it was the boss's hand-written notes, an author's long-hand manuscript, or the last typed draft that somebody had scribbled all over. If you were a typist, you needed to have your eyes on the copy, there on the copystand. You couldn't look at the keyboard. You'd be too slow and you'd kill your neck, shifting your gaze back and forth.

Before Mavis Beacon, typing class meant endless drills, to a timer, with score based on the number of words per minute correct and error-free. You'd practice with nonsense sentences: The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy black dog. Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country.

If you're lookin' at the keys, you're not typing. :thumbsup

SilentKnight 02-10-2020 12:32 PM

Taught myself to type on a manual Olivetti typewriter when I was 10-12. Took two years of typing in highschool long before computers were around.

I type about as fast as I talk...somewhere around 80-100wpm.

2MuchMark 02-11-2020 12:05 AM

Absolutely I can type without looking at the keyboard. I can even do it without looking at the screen too, though looking at the screen makes it easier and faster, not sure why.

My favorite keyboard is a 1980's IBM Model-M. I am at my fastest and more accurate on this keyboard. The only problem is that they are noisy as hell. If I'm on the phone and need to type at the same time, I'll use a second one (a Matias wireless). It sucks, but at least its quiet.

Jazzix 02-11-2020 12:35 AM

Why is it that every time you watch a YouTube video and the poster is typing they never get it right the first time... :2 cents::2 cents:

Den BongaCash 02-11-2020 04:50 AM

This made me think about when I began to type without looking. I can't remember how it happened though...

SilentKnight 02-11-2020 07:08 AM

What cracks me up is nearly every actor/actress in movies has this amazing skill to type at the speed of light. And rarely do they make errors and have to backspace.

Even worse, are "hackers" in movies. They type at lighting speed on the shittiest keyboards, with nothing but random crap appearing on the screen, with dialog like "Override Mainframe Security", etc... cringe.

Hacking is actually very boring activity, that is why movie makers need to bullshit in order to make it watchable.

LustCore 02-11-2020 03:35 PM

It depends as I am using different machines with of course different layouts and languages, plus often switching the languages.
But normally I can type by looking only at the screen even in dark (no backlit keyboard), except if I have to use special character that otherwise rarely using. And the time when I knew the ascii codes from the top of my head just long time gone.

CurrentlySober 02-13-2020 07:08 AM

No, but I can take a poo without visiting the bathroom though... :2 cents:

st0ned 02-13-2020 11:08 AM

I can and have for most of my life. Oddly enough, I primarily use both pointer fingers, and my middle finger on my right hand. I use my left pinky for shift and such. I typed this way prior to taking the classes in school where they show you how your hands should sit on the keyboard.

Generally speaking, I can type faster than most people I've competed with in the past even though my typing probably looks incredibly strange lol.

I typed four fingers the same way for years before taking typing class. I actually could hammer out 60wpm...until the teacher eventually caught me and moved me to a typewriter with no letters on the keys. Glad she did - it forced me to re-learn how to type properly.

Interesting! So you prefer the "proper" way now? I have a hard time forcing myself to re-train on something that works just fine as it is haha.

Definitely much faster...although it took me a few years to realize it.

davidCRM 02-14-2020 01:05 AM

if i try hard enough

k0nr4d 02-14-2020 05:33 AM

Typing without looking seems like a pretty normal skill people have nowadays to be honest
https://prnt.sc/r2a93q

Tjeezers 02-14-2020 10:34 AM

Its a blessing to not have to look at that damn keyboard anymore. this is not the case when the lights are off. It seems to fuck with my mind when everything around me turns dark.

LAJ 02-14-2020 10:54 AM

I took a typing class in high school and it served me well. Even after 35 years I'm still able to do about 60 WPM without looking and probably 98% + accuracy.
