If this had of happened games would be leaps and bounds ahead to what we now have interesting it is for sale. Emulators would cure my desires.

Correct - this was before the PS. There was a rumour at the time Nintendo were working with Sony on something, but then I think Nintendo canned it and Sony decided they could go their own way and that's how the Playstation happened.
