I recently watched a video on how a "dirty thirty" is underestimated. I've always used a Marlin dirty thirty for black bear.

Yes. Frequently use my model 94 30-30 for dear (and up). I prefer my bolt action 25-06 to clear out coyotes, but it is also great for dear.
