To be fair, it' not that people ignore it, it's more due to the fact India could be considered its own continent or even demographical region, so I'd consider it a common mistake rather than something people ignore.
Similarly, the Philippines is an Asian country as well, but most don't see them as "typical Asians" due to the fact they have so much Spanish culture and bloodlines. It's extremely easy to mistake your average Filipino as Hispanic.
Not to mention, the average American doesn't know shit about the rest of the world...
