You do need an MMX token to own a .xxx domain. It's fairly simple to get one. Instructions are sent automatically when you register a domain that's .xxx to your email. You only need 1 token for any number of domains.

So .xxx is cool now? Or do people use to just keep others from profiting off their names?

I think all that drama lama related to xxx was a simple hype/scare/etc - it is just another domain extension , nothing else nothing more. There are extensions which charges 3000$ per year for registration, so this is kind a cheap deal lol . Plus, xxx is no longer owned by it's original founder as far i know, so you can say there is no more "evil" component.

I registered a couple of very nice one word .xxx domains in 2016 that were deregistered and later listed for someone else with GoDaddy. No courtesy email, nothing. Neither my (former) registrar or Godaddy cared.

Oddly enough.. that name is name available to register.. but really cannot be bothered after what happened. :disgust
