If EMDR therapy works, should we be building web pages to scroll horizontally instead of vertically?
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy developed by Francine Shapiro starting in 1988 in which the person being treated is asked to recall distressing images; the therapist then directs the patient in one type of bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye rapid movement or hand tapping.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_mo...d_reprocessing Horizontal eye movement triggers an evolutionary 'orienting response' in the brain, used in scanning the environment for threats and opportunities. I find that when I'm explaining something difficult or recalling past/traumatic events, I don't make eye contact with whom I am speaking and move my eyes back and fourth horizontally. I've noticed this about Elon Musk as well when he speaks on certain subjects. https://www.quora.com/Why-does-Elon-...when-he-speaks I'm wondering if instead of endlessly scrolling through our phones vertically, we should scroll horizontally. I realize this would require some new CSS frameworks, but I'm genuinely intrigued as to what this may do to us psychologically. |
Japanese can be written in three different directions: vertically, top to bottom, right to left; horizontally, like English, from left to right, then top to bottom; and, in rare cases, horizontally backwards, from right to left.

When browsing images, doesn't it feel more comfortable to your eyes scrolling horizontally (such as in a carousel) instead of vertically?

Maybe we've been doing it wrong for years like the high jump in track & field.
Coincidentally, I'm also in Mexico while making this discovery. I'm glad you were all here to witness this unfolding of a revolutionary shift of mobile web design on this forum called GoFuckYourself.com :winkwink: |
Are you taking mushrooms again ;)

I knew this would be the first question asked. Not since Sunday...
I am connecting the dots like Steve Jobs. |
EMDR is awesome! Really helped me break through and remember a ton of things from my childhood.
