linux or windows?

I have a computer that is a bit old, however since i upgraded it for AI, it is pretty beefy and absolutely not slow for what I use it for.

It uses win10 and as you know, Micro$oft decided to end the support of the system.
I downloaded copilot and it works well on windows 10... so wtf ?!?

My computer is not compatible with windows 11, according to the message of the OS.
So, or I upgrade the computer (which is like $1000, since I will put much more RAM in it) or I just switch to linux that I use anyway more and more and where I am not nagged by some shit.

So what are you going to do ?

I can't remember how I did it, but I put Win 11 on a couple of systems that according to MS don't support it - Anyway, if you don't need MS specific software you may as well use Linux - I am thinking of putting it on my main system...

I did this a couple of weeks ago, and just saw this video the other day... I'm good for another year at least :)

Rochard 10-05-2025 03:46 PM

I use Windows.

Here is why... I remember back in the day we used to try to get Windows to do odd things, we used to modify everything, build our computers, different and odd operating systems.... What a massive waste of time to dick around with that kind of shit.

I get it, sometimes it's fun. My PC is an older Alieneware that I refurbished. But for the most part I try not to dick around with computers too much. I don't have that kind of free time.

I haven't even seen linux in over a decade.

I've ran Linux as my desktop for 27 years and have never ran Windows before.

It's not for everyone I guess but yeah I wouldn't waste any time trying to make Win11 work for something where it wasn't needed.

as windows 10 moves to the end, I hear linux calling, however, now, microsoft has said free updates for another year on 10 for EU customers, so...

windows is continued for us :2 cents:

I hear, the EU has extended updates for another year :thumbsup

Don't mind the windows 10 updates...windows is only safer without the idiots interfering with it all the time. I always had updates turned off in the past, never had any security issues.

Most on GFY prefer to lick windows…

I have both Linux and Windows, but if I didn't develop applications, I would use Linux. Linux is now just like Windows—anyone can use it.

I've heard people say that, but I haven't given it a chance myself. Can I go to BestBuy and pickup a USB key and an install manual? That would be cool...

Rochard 10-09-2025 12:52 PM

Becuase of this thread... I watched a video about linux last night. Seems a lot has changed .

If you are used to work on macbooks, linux will feel very familiar...its basically a regular OS at this point.

There was that super refined look chicks used to have to coordinate their style with their sexy stainless steel MacBook at the coffee shops... they had this certain look that really hits its zenith in the fall in Canada.

I use Mac OS, Windows 11, and Linux.

What I suggest: Use all 3.

Apple Mac's run Windows 11, and it does a great job of it. You can run them side by-side, or Windows "Within" the Mac as a virtual machine. It runs perfectly, no problems at all.

If you have an old machine doing nothing, reformat the hard disk, install Linux without the desktop, and learn it.

Knowing all 3 operating systems will become very useful and really upskills your IT game.

pornmasta 10-12-2025 06:44 PM

Why Mac?...

I'm using Windows since it was born. The update of Windows 10 to 11 on my ASUS VivoBook 515 was easy without any problem. :thumbsup
