Webcam Startup Sues Streamate Because He Didn’t Know Porn Was Illegal in Thailand 🤦🏼*♀️

So the other day, a guy messaged me all excited about his “brilliant” new idea: an Instagram for adults. He even named it fMeta and used a knock-off of Meta’s logo. 🤦*♀️

I told him straight up: Talk to a lawyer. A little legal advice can save you a LOT of money. Companies like Meta don’t play.

And honestly, this happens all the time in our industry. From adult creators accidentally infringing on Adidas logos to Lexus suing a performer for using the name “Lexus” (and winning!). We’re expected to know marketing, SEO, web dev, taxes, AND every law in every country? It’s impossible.

Which is exactly why you always talk to a lawyer before making big moves.

Well… this webcam studio learned that lesson the hard way. 😬

A U.S. webcam operator relocated his whole family and poured $500,000 into opening a studio in Bangkok after believing Streamate implicitly approved the location. Emails, country lists, internal notes — he thought Thailand was greenlit.

❌ But he never actually talked to a lawyer apparently. ❌

He opened the studio… and within weeks had to shut it down because — surprise! — porn is illegal in Thailand. A single legal consultation could have prevented everything.

Now he’s suing Streamate for $1.5 million, claiming negligent misrepresentation because they didn’t warn him.

But come on… who invests half a million dollars in a foreign country without verifying the law first?

His case will be a tough battle: platforms typically put legal responsibility on operators, and Thailand’s anti-porn laws have been in place since 2007.

It’s a painful reminder: never make major business moves without legal advice. EVER.

And for fuck sake, hire a lawyer before investing money in a startup.
