Does Europe really matter
 

I'm curiouse, if Europe vanished today, would we notice or care? It seems to me that historicaly the US tends to want to protect its interests and will involve itself if needs be. I seem to remember that in WWI and WWII we wanted to stay out of Europe (isolation policy), we only got into it becuse we were attacked in one way or another (Lusitania & Pearl Harbor). So one could say that Europe is not really a vital interest to the US and hasnt been for decades.
Or am I wrong?
What is a major US export to Europe?
The US and Japan fund nearly 50% of the UN budget, who funds the other 50%?
Do we need their help or technology to fight a war?
Can we trust their intelignece agencies?
Do they respect the US at all?
WTF are they good for besides pissing on them?

I guess you have to ask this in another way arround. Does Europe need the US? Does Europe need wars just to give the states some new crued oil fields? Does Europe need to get heard all telephone calls by the NVA/CIA. By whom you got the technology for a A-Bomb, Missiles, Jet Fighters?

UN backdues are paid. They were not paid for a while because of a dispute regarding the structure by which the US was paying a much higher percentage share of dues than it was receiving in benefits. Previously, the US was paying 30% of peacekeeping costs and 25% of regular UN fees. It is now 25% and 22% respectively. This is still not in proportion to benefit but it has been agreed to. The US Congress would not approve paying such a high amount given that the US has only one vote and one veto (20% of veto's) which set in motion the process bywhich the US was not paying it's dues until the matter what settled.

As far as the original question, I don't think the US needs Europe nor do I think Europe needs the US. Both would do well without the the other though with some loss of efficiency (higher costs for some items), and so forth.

I do think however that both are important to each other. European nations give the US important bases for military operations. The US trains many European nation's air force pilots.
Economically, neither can discount the other. I'd say politically that the EU has as much clout as the US economically (tariffs, regulations). The relationships are important.

The UK is the most important ally of the United States. Those nations together can project more power in the world through their navies and in particular their air craft carriers than all other nations combined.

For that matter, Asia too is important and increasing in importance. Japan is by far the world's second largest economy. China is up and coming.

The US didn't change. You did. ;-)

You could lose some parts of Europe and the impact would be absorbable obviously, but the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, and France are all powerful and important countries. Oh and don't forget little ole Switzerland where all the worlds pilfered money is stashed.

Actually, it would probably be a "he", since men tend to differ more from the standard than women. However, since that goes in both ways, the first killing would consist primarily of men.

If countries co-exist, then yes, they must always care what the other is doing. That's the nature of politics, economics, trade, security, etc etc.
