upgrading from my GeForce 4 128mb Ti-4200

Trying to find a good card that in stock smewhere local, and it needs dual monitor support... for doom3 and flight sims

Jay_StandAhead 08-13-2004 06:59 PM

wanna sell your ti4200?

crockett 08-13-2004 07:00 PM

when I bought my 9800 pro.. there wasn't hardly any difference in speeds when comparing the 128mb card vs the 256mb..

JSA Matt 08-13-2004 07:00 PM

I would avoid the high end ATI cards and go for the geForce 6800 ultra, if you are determined to upgrade now that is. Personally, i'm going to wait for the 512mb cards coming this fall :glugglug

(ps: I have the same card now, XFX GF4 Ti 4200, it's rock solid still)

*BackOrdered*

its the word backordered thats stopping me

crockett 08-13-2004 07:12 PM

I will also recomend going the nVida route over ATI.. I had a Ti4600 and the card was great, but a bad power supply killed it.. I bought the 9800 pro and have had a lot of issues with it.. I had to RMA the first one and the second still causes trouble to this day..

:321GFY ATI

Mr Pheer 08-13-2004 07:15 PM

I guess doom3 and the upcoming halflife2 has everybody upgrading so the best cards are sold out

bjjb 08-13-2004 07:21 PM

Jeeeeeeeezus heres one in stock,........ BUT

$681????????????

For that price the least the fuckers could do is throw in free shipping or something

JSA Matt 08-13-2004 07:25 PM

So many people are going to be kicking themselves in the heads for not waiting for the 512 cards... those $500+ 256mb cards will drop in half, easily..

OR, look for a 256 card that uses PCI Express, so you could just pop another one in there and run them together in SLI mode. This would also require a new mobo tho...

Only difference now is that the newer games like Doom3 can use better quality textures if you have more memory on the video card. I think they will actually allow fully uncompressed textures if you had a 512 MB video card, but they don't even make any yet.

I've got a 9500 Pro, and it only lets me run Doom3 on medium texture quality because it doesn't have enough RAM. (only 128 MB)

fr8 08-13-2004 08:20 PM

What ever you get just make sure you get dual DVI outs. Those are the shit. :)

NichePay_Manny 08-13-2004 08:44 PM

That looks good to me!

Face (o_0) 08-14-2004 12:59 AM

if its for doom 3 get a nvidia card

Mr Pheer 08-14-2004 04:37 PM

I got lucky, the best buy close to my house got three GeForce 6800GT-OC 256mb GDDR3 cards in today, I snagged one up for $399 plus a $20 rebate

Its not the 6800 Ultra but should do nicely until the 512meg cards come out.

Now, who wants to buy my GeForce4 Ti-4200 128meg?

DarkJedi 08-14-2004 04:46 PM

i got Radeon9800 Pro and it still cant handle Doom3

going to wait for 2 Geforce 6800 ultras in dual SLI mode
