What is your purpose in going? The benefits will depend upon the nature of the problem.

Like anything else -- if you believe that acupuncture will work, and if you fork over money for the treatment, and if it is somewhat discomforting to go through and/or inconvenient, then it will "work" for a variety of problems in the sense that you will feel that you've gotten somewhat better.
In other words -- a placebo effect. Which is fine, and could even be worth the money.

More controversial is whether acupuncture (being stuck with needles in various places) works better than other placebo treatments for the control of pain, nausea, asthma, etc. It might -- but the evidence is not as strong as most people think. But since it does not harm (except perhaps to your pocketbook) the downside risk is not very great (but don't skip chemotherapy to take acupunture treatments).

Then we get to the issue of whether it actually matters whether the needles are placed exactly where the acupuncture guides say they need to be placed. Very little evidence for this.

Finally, there is the issue of the explanation for acupuncture benefits (if there really are any). The technique itself is supposedly based upon "Qi" or "Chi" a vague kind of internal energy that has never been objectively measured or identified. However, even if there is no such thing as "Qi", acupuncture could still work for other reasons.

Rob Roy I understand what you are saying but in regards to acupuncture being a placebo I can't disagree with you more.

While living in Los Angeles I visited a well known doctor who was rather expensive but effective.

I had suffered migraine headaches that would last for 2+ weeks at a time at least 3 times a year since I was 10 years old.

I had finally grown tired of it and was looking for some help at this point mainstream doctors couldn't do much to help me and I was at a breaking point. It was affecting every aspect of my life.

Well a friend of mine told me of this guy so I went to visit him. He sat down and talked to me for a bit asking me questions. He asked me about my headaches and if I had any other pains. I had been also having a pain in my right arm as well as a few other problems when I showed him where the pain was in my arm he told me I had a "gastrointestinal disorder."

We hadn't even gotten that far in the interview yet and he had already aware that I was having gastrological problems before I even told him based on me telling him I had a pain in my arm. Don't ask me how but he was correct.

Anyway we continued on with the interview and he then put me in a chair and pulled out a tray with a bunch of pins on it.

As he began to stick them in various places throughout my body I noticed what felt like an electrical charge shooting through my body when he would tweak and turn a needle. It wasn't a painful charge, but actually kind of tickled...it felt good.

Anyway I sat there in this chair and after a small amount of time I was sent home with some homeopathic medicine form my gastro problems and an appointment to see him in a few days.

I was already feeling better...relaxed etc.

I awoke the next morning my migraine wasn't completely gone but it sure was a hell of an improvement.

Anyway I went back for one more visit and sure it cost me a lot of money again but after that last visit my migraine was gone and I haven't had another since and it has been 11 years since I went to that doctor.

Well I thought I would just share my experience...good luck Juicy hope you get everything worked out.

when I was a kid I went because of my sinuses, asthma and other nose/lungs related shit..

she would put those freakin' needles all over my HEAD, NOSE, FOREHEAD' BACK, LEGS' etc...

Hehe, Baba, my girlfriend works as a phlaba .. flabata.. oh hell, she takes peoples plasma at a plasma center.

She is all the time looking at my veins saying.. "Oh, that's a good one". It gets kinda freaky when I am nude, hehe.

I stopped letting her take my plasma when she stuck me too far down the arm. There are some places one wasn't meant to be jabbed with a 16 gauge needle!
