E-Mail Virus and GFY:
Does anyone think that being a member of this board is connected with the rash of E-mail viruses being received daily?
I have put some thought into this and having been online even before there was an internet (remember the days of the old Bulletin Board Systems) I can't recall having received an E-mail virus (maybe I did and just forgot) untill I became a member of this board. Now (like many of you) I receive E-mail virus's everyday. Is there anyone that is working on putting a stop to these viruses. Is there anyway to put a stop to these viruses? I have never been infected (well with a trojan once) because I do not open attachments and Norton Anti Virus 2002 seems to work well, but it is irritating to receive them daily and the number seems to be growing. If some techie wizz kid could put a stop to them it would be a service that I would pay a reasonable amount, just to stop the irritation. Anyone have some input on this subject? |
What?

Hurm....
You want someone to write something that stops you from getting viruses altogether? That's what your antivirus is for. It scans the email when it comes in and dumps the bad ones. You can't really scan for viruses before the email gets there. |
Lensman:
I am not sure what " What?" means, but I will try to clarify. What I am asking is this: Is the exposure on this board responsible for some prick, or pricks, sending out these E-mail Viruses. As I stated I don't recall ever receiving one until I became a member of this board. FATPad: I am not asking for someone to write a script. I am talking about someone tracing these things down to their source and nailing the person sending them. The number of these things are growing almost daily and someone is sending them. Why can't the E-mail provider scan the E-mails before they are unloaded. Surely something can be done to put a stop to these things or at the least minimize the number of them being sent. |
Is the email address you are recieving the virii on used specifically for GFY? Are there any cc: addresses in the email?
I have recieved a few virii as attachments on some of my email addresses but nothing more than usual. I have recieved no email with attachments of virus from the address that I have here at GFY. |

I will get back to you when I check today's incoming. The E-mail address is the one that I use everywhere. I only have two and one I seldom use.

DrunkMonkey:
I don't get your meaning. I have Anti Virus software that lets me know there is a virus with the E-mail. Why doesn't the E-mail provider have the same and delete the E-mail before it is unloaded. |

You get email virus attachments from time to time because you are on the net, plain and simple. They are not "usually" targeted to individuals...

DrunkMonkey:
I get your message. Is anyone anywhere trying to eradicate these viruses, or trace them to their source? Does anyone have an answer for that question? |

http://www.spammotel.com If you just want to keep two accounts use this service. You can assign different addresses to your two accounts and you can label each address so you know where the email comes from. It is an awesome program. I have been using it for years now. It is free and you can totally block all spam with it. Damn, wish they had a revshare program :Graucho It does not block attachments but it will let you know how someone got ahold of your email and you can block that source. |
DrunkMonkey:
Thanks for the tip. Looks good to me. |

http://online.securityfocus.com/archive/100 These are some of the best in the industry and are extremely helpful. Most of these guys work on the front lines of the security war (how dramatic that sounded. here, let me throw in a smiley for a visual :ak47: ) These guys are mostly responsible for identifying and solving most cyber attacks that I have known of. |

Another very interesting site. Thanks again. Boldy: What is Amavis? |

its a server side virusscanner, using multiple virus libs etc. |
**Why doesn't the E-mail provider have the same and delete the E-mail **
Simple... US Federal Laws prohibit this specifically even on inter company levels. |
Boldy:
Well I am satisfied with Norton Antivirus 2002. It scans the incoming mail as well as scans the outgoing mail and is doing a good job. In addition, as I have stated, I don't open attachements, so I am relatively safe. It is just the irritation of receving them. I usually get about a dozen per day. It may just be coincidence but I don't recall receiving them before I became a member of this board and the number received daily seems to be increasing. It is like someone is using a bot to send them out. |
So open the email headers on the infected mail and match the sending info...

Do you have a URL for legalities involved for E-mail? |
I get about three infected emails a day.. Pretty Irritating..
Dumb Fucks, we should take these bastards down! |
path is right,I have an email address that I only used to register here and I get "mail unknown" returns with viruses in them, they are just spydering the emails from here...so "what" has been answered :thumbsup
|
I used to have an addy to someplace about that pathfinder. I'll look to see if I still have it. Lost an address book last fall and it might have been in it.
I'm pert sure I found the info and addy on wither symantecs or mcaffees sites. Following the server bounces the mails go thru from a couple of people who has recieved the mail would most likely prove valuable in tracking someone unless they are really good at spoofing. |

I change my email address on all my pages I could find... to a Yahoo address and now I get very few emails with Virus's... to my regular address.... |
I get e-mail virus mails sent to ANY e-mail addy I have, domain based and ISP based.
I now also get returned/undeliverable e-mails that look like I sent them, and sent them to other webmasters, usually. I was freaked for a minute, until I realized that the sending addy claimed to be used is not working. I can't SEND from my dial-up addy, because I am using my cable modem provider for the past few months. I have to change the sending addy when I reply to mail sent to my dial up addy, or Outlook gives me errors. So, KimmyKim, Zilla, Lenseman and everyone else... it's really NOT coming from me. Honest! |
The first one today is from this Email address:

These boards have nothing to do with the spread of infected emails. Most virus infection is spread because of the design of the virus itself. It is MEANT to spread. Therefore, when you get one in your email, it is programmed to not only fuck up your world, but to send out an email to every single person in your address book with the virus itself as an attachment...and so on and so forth. Pretty simple really. As far as hunting down these people and throwing them in jail? It's being done, but when you consider the sheer volume of new viri every day...well, that's just life. Irritating shit happens. :winkwink: Here is a link to some information on virus creators getting busted...have fun. http://dailynews.yahoo.com/fc/Tech/Computer_Viruses :) |
