Sounds yummy.. why the seaweed?

moeloubani 09-29-2008 05:58 PM

seriously last time I had good french toast was around 7-10 years ago

and i forget how to make it completely, every time I try I end up with shitty ass soggy bread :(

bloggingseo 09-29-2008 05:59 PM

I have it every few months, all of a sudden I'll have a craving for it and cook it up. I used to live it when I was a kid and grandpa made it for me :-)

At least your maple syrup is safe :) I thought the fish, rice, seaweed combo was part of a diet or something.

DWB 09-29-2008 06:12 PM

Mix a few eggs(3), a cup of half and half, and some vanilla. If bread is already stale, great. If its not, put it on a toast rack or lay it out overnight so it gets stale. 1/2" thick is a good size.

Preheat oven to 375.

Soak the stale bread in the liquid mixture for 30 seconds per side.

Cook up in a buttered pan till brown.

When all slices are browned, put on middle rack in oven and cook for 5 minutes.

Thank you Alton Brown. My fiance wouldn't let me get the stuff to make it yesterday. Said it would take up unnecessary room in the kitchen and fridge.

Of course not, its not nearly as appetizing as fermented fish sauce.

I like adding some cinnamon & nutmeg as a spice and I also feel that the dipping batter should get an splash or two of fresh OJ (it will not curdle). Also think you can not really over soak good thick stale bread, let it take as much as it can hold. If people are real lazy or by preference you can skip baking and fry it in a non stick pan over medium heat, flipping once.

My wife really likes making it from left over raisin or other flavored breads.

About a year ago which stinks since I do like it but I never think about making it when I should. It is a good use up of bread but I always have to put not so healthy stuff on it and blow it.

Kudles 09-30-2008 11:40 AM

About once a week it's my favorite breakfast food

Nikki_Licks 09-30-2008 11:47 AM

Just for the record, Stephane has never actually seen "my skinny bum".

It's just an expression.

Nothing to see here, move along :)

Don't eat breakfast much unless it's yogurt or something fast. We sometimes will have a big breakfast for dinner.

I did run across an interesting recipe a week ago. May try it for Xmas morning.

French Toast Bake

1 pkg (12 oz) Brown sugar & honey breakfast links
12 eggs (it makes 12 servings)
1 can (30 oz) pumpkin pie filling
1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
15 slices white bread, cubed
confectioners? sugar
maple syrup

Cook sausage according to package directions. Cool slightly; cut into 1/4″ slices. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, pie filling, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla. In a very large bowl, combine sausage and cubed bread. Add pumpkin mixture, stir to coat. Transfer to greased 13×9″ baking dish. Bake uncovered at 350 for 35-40 minutes or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. Dust with confectioners? sugar. Serve with syrup.
