HELP! How To Rid My Place of Centipedes?

I get these house centipedes every year. Usually just one here or there in the tub. But this year has been bad. They've obviously been building up forces for some time and have waged a battle against me. It's been out of control, killing 1-2 of these fuckers a day in the basement area. They've even started making their assault upstairs.

Anyone have experience killing bugs? I have Orkin coming out tomorrow but want something that I can do on my own. Running a dehumidifier downstairs at the moment too. Does Boric Acid work well? What about bug bombs?

This is what I'm dealing with, I have no problem sacrificing my health to rid my home of these.

Dude... get out of the house..... NOW

Dood 10-16-2008 12:08 PM

Get a cat. Mine will eat anything that moves. It ate a gigantic furry spider last night.

stickyfingerz 10-16-2008 12:08 PM

Hate them fuckers. Only saw 2 or 3 total this year and that was when the condensation pipe on our ac unit plugged up and started leaking. I didnt catch it for a few days then unplugged it and got everything dried out. Found the ones that showed up shortly after that, so moisture is def what they are there seeking out. Dehumidifier should help.

What a beautiful thing!

Tanker 10-16-2008 12:15 PM

I hate those little fuckers Ellisa has the dogs trained to attack them when she screams. The dogs come running and searching the floor

its actually a little funny to see it happen

I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.

I have a bug guy come out here monthly to spray. Over 2 years here, and I've seen maybe 3 bugs in the house.

They're don't really bite, are not vectors of disease. Don't get all up in arms over a little insect like that. Just get a cat.:2 cents:

Cyandin 10-16-2008 12:37 PM

Then again, this is coming from the guy that is raising three of these:

Looking forward to when they will mature into three of these:

What you want are some glue boards:

Example: http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/tr...rds-p-134.html

You should be able to get them at a local store.

Place them on the floor along the walls in the secluded and hidden areas of your basement.

Sure they bite, and it hurts about as much as a horsefly bite or a bee sting.

Strange thing is I haven't seen one since I moved to a farm. When I lived in the burbs they were always kicking around in the basement. Even when I bought a newly built townhouse.

I don't care about the bite, I just think they are disgusting. Seriously scares the shit out of me to see these fucks sprint across the floor at warp speed. I don't mind big spiders, snakes, etc, but these guys are the devil.

And what is that bug you are raising?

Tom_PM 10-16-2008 01:25 PM

They like moisture, so a dehumidifier is perfect for a basement in IL I'd say!
I hate those ugly things.

They are Dynastes sp. larvae, commonly know as the Eastern Hercules Beetle. There are two species in this genera, tityus and granti, and they are among the largest North American Coleopterans(beetles).

I'm a lifelong entomologist, and actually had these three larvae overnighted to me from my friends yard in San Antonio. I'm very excited to see them develop, and since they larvae are all 4th and 5th instar (in their 4th and 5th stage of larval development (out of 5 stages)),I should expect pupation any time now.

%99.99 of insects aren't really gross at all, once you get a good look at them, and considering there are over 250,000 species of beetles alone, I liken collecting insects to engaging in a lifelong scavenger hunt with 750k+ items on the list. :)

fuzebox 10-16-2008 01:43 PM

I usually only see 1-2 a year, but killed in in the last month in my living room :( Fucking things are so nasty looking. Must be the extra long rainy season this year.

RobertD 10-16-2008 01:59 PM

I hear bats and toads like them. Get some bats and toads.

I'd honestly take scorpions over those things. I don't normally mind bugs, but this one just turns me into a pussy.

Now a scorpion will get me standing on the sofa shrieking like a girl...

Thankfully haven't seen one in the new house and it's been almost a year.

I'm assuming the collection isn't all live :) I think that's awesome.some people collect boots and cigars, you collect bugs.probably worth a mint if you wanted to breed or sell them?
