gmail targeted adsense is not really fair play imho

I got an email from a vitamin supplier I had ordered from, confirming my order, and at the top of gmail I noticed a big ad for a discount vitamin supplier....

this seems kind of uncool of google to target ads in that way and basically allow their advertisers to try to poach customers from companies doing business communication over the internet... it would be sort of like intercepting your telephone calls and playing ads to you based on stuff you are ordering over the phone... or reading your usps mail and targeting your junk mail based on who you are getting mail from already

:2 cents:

I just had a thought, I wonder if you could target ccbill as a keyword in adwords for gmail advertising and hit an extremely targeted crowd of people that pay for porn :pimp:2 cents::pimp

yeah, but I'm not looking at it from the perspective of the people using gmail, I am looking at it from the perspective of the business sending customers business emails :2 cents:

This is no different then grocery stores that print out coupons for you - ever notice if you buy brand-A they print out a coupon for brand-B?

Yup. Totally unfair. But that's life.

Whenever I get an invoice for something, some smart ass ad appears with exactly what I'm paying for but with some bonuses.

I also love the way Google allows you to publish only 3 ad units per page, while gmail is filled with ads

Enjoy your free Gmail account. :2 cents:

Gmail FTW!

I get emails from PETA to my gmail and the adsense is petakills.com an anti Peta website. Its definitely an evil way to influence by targeting the inbox.

That's part of the reason why they continue to be profitable, while competitors like yahoo are sinking...

ebay does this to their sellers. Under the listings you'll highly targeted ads selling the same items listed above by their paying customers. It's one of the reasons I don't have anything to do with ebay anymore.

Man, thats life... You think that shit don't go on out there in the world? See an ad on a billboard for Wendy's or Burger King right next to a McDonalds, it happens, its called bringing in more customers then your competitors, its a dog eat dog world and you do what you gotta do to make a living, having sympathy for your competition don't get you anywhere in life.

bobby666 10-22-2008 11:44 AM

yahoo does that for years in my yahoo mail account

SykkBoy 10-22-2008 11:48 AM

my favorite is cleaning out my spam box and seeing recipes for spam in the ad sense ads...
