Proof that you do not need over the top graphics for clicks

I have kept a K.I.S.S. attitude no matter how big or small the project I work on, and I was just clicking around on one of my blogs and saw this Google banner. Proof, you do not need very graphic banners to get clicks.

However, with adult stuff, I know images are needed in the banners.

If you need banners hit me up!

I keep clicking the banner and nothing happens.

I agree with keep it simple, but we do not know how many clicks that banner really got, nor do we know if it was more then a textual one.

RamsesPickUp 11-04-2008 07:14 AM

Keep it simple stupid, a recipe that never gets old

beemk 11-04-2008 07:15 AM

i agree with the concept, but i dont see how this is any proof.

Some of the best converting galleries and ads I've ever seen are galleries that people would say "no...seriously?" It's all in the presentation mang. ;)

I get requests for galleries on plain white background all the time. My favorite endorsement is Shemp saying he had a gallery I made for him on Worldsex and made 7 full sales before the day was up. Simple stuff converts.

People have often knocked my work for being simple, hundreds of others LOVE IT! but all the work Ive done is specifically requested by clients and they keep coming back.

Some people want huge headers and sliced graphics, and some of my clients want NO HEADERS, just clean text images and no animations.

some get it, some dont.

cherrylula 11-04-2008 07:23 AM

well, if Google is doing it, I'd assume it works. :)

Do you think Google just does shit willy nilly? Or do you think they DON'T hire research firms, and psychologists to study click habits of surfers.

you think they just hired some hack and he built a simple banner and just tossed it up there?

It's there and looks the way it does, and is using that font, and that color scheme because tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of market research and data collection over whatever period of time went into it's simplistic design.

I learned my lesson in the graphics game. With LotzaDollars, after seeing the real numbers on conversions, I've pushed for us to go to completely simple, text heavy galleries...not because of personal preference, but because quite simply, they just convert better. That's the honest truth. Now, that's not to say that some of the more graphic heavy galleries don't convert, at times they do, but it has to be a perfect mixture I think, whereas, with the more simple galleries, you aren't distracting the user from what you're trying to sell them, which in the end is the content and the site.

When I started out, I really thought that super flashy graphics and shiny text and all that was what sold porn, but it's not. Clearly state what the site is about, show some nice looking content and give the morons a nice, big "CLICK HERE IDIOT" link and you'll make sales.

did you miss the part of where i said i agree? again as i said before, your assumption of google doing things right is not the same as proof.

fris 11-10-2008 06:21 AM

best galleries are no graphics at all, banner on top, pics in middle, and text link below

Brujah 11-10-2008 06:24 AM

you bumped a thread from 6 days ago just to say this?

The proof of google doing something right is Google itself. If you need to see stats, go look up GOOG on a stock chart.
