Obscenity prosecutions took a huge toll on the porn industry as publishers embraced an every-man-for-himself approach under relentless attacks from Bush's right-wing administration.

Extreme Associates production company was prosecuted on obscenity charges in 2003 for videos featuring urination, adults portrayed as children and simulated rape. The case, which has been bouncing around the court system for years, has yet to close. Extreme Associates owner Rob Black blasted the porn industry to Wired Magazine for breaking ranks, rather than standing united. "You hear all this solidarity. Bullshit," he said to Randy Dotinga of Wired in 2006. "This industry, except for about five people, has hung me out to dry. Everybody wants to make a fucking compromise."

Following the Extreme Associates case, pressure against the industry intensified after the Justice Department issued an obscenity indictment against JM Productions and Five Star Video over four porn DVDs, one featuring bukkake and another that reportedly simulated torturous oral sex to satirize the Abu Ghraib prison scandal. The defendants faced a maximum sentence of five years for each of several obscenity counts. All charges against JM Productions and owner Jeff Steward were dropped in federal court in October 2007 due to a lack of evidence that JM sold the videos to Five Star Video. The case against Five Star Video is still pending.

Most recently, Evil Angel owner John Stagliano was charged in April 2008 by a federal grand jury with multiple obscenity violations stemming from the sale and distribution of adult videos through the mail and the Internet.

The indictment, handed down April 8th in Washington, D.C., names Stagliano and his companies Evil Angel Productions and John Stagliano Inc. as defendants. The videos cited as "obscene" are Jay Sin's Milk Nymphos, Joey Silvera's Storm Squirters 2 and an online trailer for Belladonna's Fetish Fanatic 5.

MORGAN COUNTY, Ind. - Hard2Find Videos owner Loren Jay Adams was released from Marion County jail on his own recognizance last Friday following his arrest on federal obscenity charges. In an exclusive interview with AVN, Adams revealed details of the three videos seized by the FBI during the bust.

"Two of them were bestiality videos, and one of them was a fisting video," Adams told AVN. "I did not produce these; I did not make them. These are videos I've acquired over the years through trading."
