The Miracle of birth; our dog had puppies [[PICS inside!!]]

So we have 3 dogs, two American Eskimos, and we recently brought a Pomeranian into the family. My wife is a big animal lover (not like that sickos!), and casually breeds dogs. We've had several litters of Eskimo pups, but this time we decided to mix it up a bit.

"Designer breeds" are apparantly all the rage now in the breeding business, and one of those designer breeds is what's called a "Pomino," which is cross between an American Eskimo and a Pomeranian. So, this past Saturday, our female American Eskimo gave birth to 7 Pomino puppies. While my wife assisted the female with cleaning the puppies off, I, of course, alternated between shooting live video of the entire event and snapping stills.

So, here are pictures of the birth of 7 Pomino puppies.

Let's start with the mother:

And the father:

Obviously, the Eskimo is solid white. Our Pomeranian is mostly white with light brown spots. So, wouldn't you figure, the puppies all came out white with BLACK spots!? Here's the birthing process:

The first two, cleaned up and nursing:

Number 3, still in its sac and being pushed out:

All 7 nursing:

Their first professional photo shoot, the next day:

And one close-up, for good measure:

I shot a lot more than that (close to 150 pics), but I figured I'd spare you the disgusting pics.

They look just fine with the black spots. I had a liver dalmation and ended up keaping one of her litters who is alive today. He is a Mut as he has brown and black spots. When he was born he was all white, with no spots.

Oh, I wasn't worried at all about the spots being black instead of brown. I told my wife they look like little cows, but I know they'll end up being adorable. The only concern my wife has is whether potential puppy buyers question if the father is *really* the father. Maury here we come!

Spunky 11-10-2008 10:11 PM

I really don't think he was the father.it was the black lab down the street.she got the jungle fever

Isnt there a significant size difference between the two dogs? Dont want a visual of how that worked.

BTW the Eskimo is absolutely beautiful. Good luck with the puppies!

Yes. The Eskie, Vesta, weighs around 23 lbs. The Pomeranian, Bandit, is lucky if he weighs 13lbs. For the week or so that she was in heat, we watched Bandit *trying* to get her, which was quite the site. He was on his tippy toes most of the time, his front paws holding on to her sides for dear life. He was in dire need of a step stool. We once actually witnessed him getting a running start and jumping up on her. He was thrusting away without his feet even on the ground! I wish I had got that on film (gotta love his persistence :thumbsup).

We never did actually see Bandit "get" her. When we go out, we lock the dogs in a crate, but during her heat, we only put those two in the crate and left our other male Eskie (who's fixed, btw) out of the crate. It was one of those times that Bandit got Vesta pregnant. I feel confident assuming he used the sides of the cage as steps to get high enough...

Thanks! And thanks to everyone else who complimented on the puppies, the parents and/or my photography. :)

Oh, and an interesting side note...

During the week that Vesta was in heat and Bandit was trying to procreate, Leighlani Red was here to shoot content for her site. That was an interesting ice-breaker for our first shoot with her, to say the least... Especially when she would sit on the floor and Bandit would jump on her back and attempt to hump her. He's got good taste, what can I say?

Educate your buyers a bit on genetics. Our long hair chocolate Chihuahua had several litters, and only ONE chocolate. She had several black (grandma's genes coming through), a few white (hell if I know), red fawns and fawns and an odd taupe colored one. All were beautiful and not one person questioned the bloodline.
