Updating the members area. How to tell the members about it?

When you update your members area/site, do you send a newsletter/email to the people that has registred for a newsletter?

I have been thinking of setting up a newsletter that my members and people that visit my sites can registre their emailaddress and get a email when I update the sites. Is this a good idea? Or how would you do it?

Cheers

put a message inside your members area.
Sometimes people go days or weeks without checking their e-mail. Also, some people have e-mail addresses that they only use to sign up to programs with so they dont have to deal with e-mail from those programs.
I'de put a message in the members area.

Send them at least 3 emails with the announcement, use popup banners for other programs to catch their attention, embed a flash movie with audio to make sure everybody knows what's going on. Repeat as many times as necessary.

You need something outside of your members area, the more info you give non-members showing them that all sorts of things are going on in the members area, the more interested they will be to signup, and you keep you current members updated at a glance. If you update on a regular pattern your members will know when to come back for the latest update.

And go to JAIL for spamming.

KEEP IN MIND THAT A SPAM REPORT CAN BE GENERATED BY A MEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Be really Freaking careful with mailing.

That said, Wonder why the big companies don't mail every time they update? Because they update every day. Its as easy as that. Put it on the tour, Put it in the members area. We update every day at X time, and then do it.

Newsletter is a great idea. We have seen our members come back for more. The key is to not make it too annoying, even though we update everyday with content, we only send the newsletter out every 2 weeks. The other thing is to have an area on your site where you post short descriptions of you updates and have it be RSS feed enabled. That way a member can just have the RSS feed in their browser and see when your site is updated...

my members area is updated daily so I'd be spamming their mailbox every day. so No. I simply add the content, and they come and see it :)

I have a "Members Area Updates" section in my member areas where I list the updates, that works best for me and my members.
