What is a modded XBox 360?
I've been hearing about these.
What are they? What's the benefit of getting one? |

Welcome to the board. You haven't been around here long so maybe you don't know that there are plenty of people who have been here for years who's opinion and insight matter. When I ask a general question I'm actually asking them. If you contribute something worthwhile in a few thousands posts from now maybe I'll be asking you. Until then... :321GFY |

When the 360 first came out they were all over, but M$ has found a few ways to spot these systems on xboxlive and ban them from using the service or turning it an expensive paperweight (giving it the red ring of death) They are only worth getting if you don't plan on playing xboxlive or updating the systems firmware. Most places usually charge about $50 to $200 to mod the firmware or you can buy them for about $400+ on CL. Honeslty not with it IMO since most of the "backup" games run about $20 to $30 online and you can't use xboxlive... Or at least that I've found |
Ah, I see. I was looking at some of the media center functions and everyone kept saying get a modded one and you can do more.
Fuck it, I was planning on just using Gamefly to rent games anyway. What's the point of owning them after you beat them anyways? |

I rent a lot of games and only buy ones that have online game play like halo, call of duty etc. A lot of the underground and tunneling software to play others, similar to what you can do on xboxlive is very limited with players now. I wouldn't buy a modded box now IMO, but if you don't care about HD graphics, check out the old mods for PS2 which you can install up to a 120GB inside to store "backups" |
I wish Gamefly rented to Canada :(

Are you talking about the new software that's pre-intalled or do you mean 3rd party? |

Then there is a section to setup netflix or watch media, then u can plug in a USB device and select the drive and watch away. You don't need any new software to buy, just a basic (free) xboxlive account. |
With the first xbox modding was pretty cool. Back then you could only rent games for 3 days so it worked out well. They still caught you on xbox live though pretty easy. Also the old xbox had a huge hard drive that was never used and you could put another one in it really easy.
I would never mod a 360. You can rent games forever now, get used games for cheap and trade in old games towards new ones so it's not worth it. |

If they would allow you to save game saves and other stuff to a external device then there wouldn't be any used for modding at all. That's the one thing the PS3 has an advantage over the 360. |
Don't know about your experienc but I live in Montreal and my Xbox 360 is flash modded (not a physical chip alteration, a programming change really) and it allows me to play burned games online on Xbox Live. It only cost 100 to do and burned games here cost liek 5-10$. Since most 360 games are like 60$, if i buy like 4 or more burned games its already a worthy investment, so it worked out really well for me
|
I flashed the firmware on my xbox and I use it in place of game rentals. I've been able to play on xbox live without any issues.
What the OP is talking about MIGHT be the original xbox with xbox media center. If you want a good MEDIA player buy a popcorn hour device. I play solid 1080p content and ANYTHING you could dream of. Forget the xbox for anything more than divx playback. |

i got a decent deal on it, but the only thing that sucked is we could never play on xboxlive; it wouldnt allow us to even sign on so im not sure what the deal is. but i used to buy games from this kid on CL so i wouldnt have to spend $60 for another version of madden, but suddenly he just disappeared and stopped answering his phone or emails :1orglaugh:1orglaugh i sold it before i moved because i really never played it much, but now i wouldnt buy one. one thing i did like about the old xbox and ps2 was you can store games on the system with the HDD which was nice |
The only people who have been banned from XBL for having modded boxes were busted playing GoW2 and COD5 online upwards of a week beforehand. The same thing happened around the time Halo 3 was released.
I've modded a bunch of consoles for friends and family and only 1 of the idiots was dumb enough to download and play a game 2 weeks before it was released. |

The new 360 system update allows you to store the games on the HDD too. |

Is this a trick thread to find out who supports theft?

the thing i dont understand is that they try and make it illegal for you to mod the software or make any alterations once you buy it. if your paying $300 to $400 for a gaming console you should be able to do what you want to it I do understand about buying burt games if you dont have one, thats stealing. but if you own the game, you should be legally able to buy backups or be able to store them on your HDD so if you go to a friends, you dont have to tote 50 games with you |
If there is a version of MAME for the 360 then it would be worth it. Saw a video on youtube but nowhere to actually get it
|
Im gonna get my modded soon! Cannot afford all those games I want!
