Google's toolbar getting more obnoxious today?!

just shows you how toolbars are out of control, it seems that google's toolbar updates itself without asking and probably communicates to homebase conitnually too I wouldn't doubt

I noticed today it got more obnoxious, with popping up 'help' balloons for great new features, and when I did a ctrl-F to do a search it has hijacked that and has a new search function in IE

I wonder how much spyware type activity is going on with the google toolbar

probably time to uninstall it on my main browsing browser

Machete_ 12-28-2008 12:08 PM

I removed it about a month ago right after it updated itself and had the fucking GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe running in the background 24/7

Install Microsoft Network Monitor 3, then you see exactly how often the google toolbar calls home. All the MS haters would go nuts if it was MS that did this

The first company that designs and publish a OS toolsuite instead of pre2000 Browser toolbars, will take crossplatform interaction to a new level.

Right now it looks like it will be MS with the "accelerate" function. But I want to see it work before I reccomend it

Check the Alexa dev forum. There are many ideas but very little action

Never kept it. It's annoying!

Google is the biggest database of people's behavior on line in the world. None of google services work if you block cookies. Your cookie has a unique identifier that collects and stores information about what you do and where you go. It's worse than facebook.

Google does not approve of your statements.

I, for one, welcome our pixelated Google overlords.

and disabled all of the google stuff, and found more add ons I didn't even realize were there

If you're so worried about Google...

This coming from a guy running Internet Explorer? Go sit down.

I love Vista and stand by my assessment. Anyone who has issues with it just doesn't know how to use it properly.

I run IE, Firefox, and SeaMonkey

sometimes we are 'forced' to deal with Microsoft, but if given the choice between XP and Vista I take XP (and I have both running on different computers, still use my older XP machine more)

anyways this has gone off topic, the only reason I posted about your OS was because your post wrongly assumed that Vista had anything to do with the problem in this thread

Fanboy? Hardly... I have Synergy running here with Vista on left and Gentoo on the right.

Are you serious? You must be reading a different thread. I believe you were the first to mention anything about an operating system. Mine was the one with the Google toolbar option circled.

ok, I saw your vista window and since I am not running vista on this computer, and therefore your suggestion was not possible, I made a joke about the os.... nothing to get excited about here, carry on... :thumbsup

wyldblyss 12-28-2008 02:40 PM

Silly me, I always knew that google called home all the time. It's not something new, they have been trying to take over the internets a long time hehe

That option is available regardless of what operating system you are running. It is a Google toolbar option.

It only calls home if you have features turned on that require it, such as the PageRank option. Your browsing history does not get transferred, this has been proven already after multiple security bulletins.

Super Negro 12-28-2008 04:29 PM

tin foil hat time

what the hell do you all think they are doing, collecting data to find out exactly what YOU are surfing so they can hand it in to the government and build a big file on you?

that is what is wrong with people today, they think THEY are important in the grand scheme of things, all you are to them is a geotargetted ip address they won't bat an eyelash if you don't install their toolbar and could cares less if you hate them

I would go so far as to say they probably don't even have your google registered email matched up with the results they get from calling home in the toolbar

ThumbLord 12-28-2008 04:33 PM

it is/was always obnoxious

For me the problem is not the data it collects. For me its because it slows down the load time of the browser and its a security issue.

Every time i start a new instance of IE, it checks for updates

add this line to your hosts file
127.0.0.1 toolbar.google.com

it will try and ping it and can't and not try and autoupdate
