"Conservative MP Fred Nile says he wants topless bathing banned in NSW to protect Sydney's Muslim and Asian communities.

The Reverend Nile has rejected allegations that prudishness is behind a bill he has prepared to ban nudity, including topless sunbathing, on the state's most popular beaches.

Australia's reputation as a conservative but culturally inclusive sociery was at risk of erosion by more liberal overseas visitors, he said.

"Our beaches should be a place where no one is offended, whether it's their religious or cultural views," he said.

"If they've come from a Middle Eastern or Asian country where women never go topless - in fact they usually wear a lot of clothing - I think it's important to respect all the different cultures that make up Australia."

The practice was at risk of raising the ire of Muslim men in particular, Mr Nile said.

"I don't want to have any provocations or disturbances on our public beaches," he said."

I kind of agree with banning topless at the public beaches in one way, lots of families dont visit the beach for this reason and shouldnt have to see this if they go, making a section of the beach topless however would be a better solution than banning totally

I am trying to look at this from both points.. I come from and again live in an area that does HUGE tourism. So with that in mind I can understand not wanting to offend the tourists. HOWEVER. If that beach makes most of its money from local tourism and locals in general, then the tourists ( Arabics Or who ever ) can simply go some place else, or they can make a separate beach for the people that dont want to see some tits.

Why stop there? The beach should be separated out for men and women. No more family trips to the beach.

We get stories like these every damn day in the UK.

I think children should be taken to topless beaches, so they learn what real bodies look like, not just magazine models and movie stars. Once you see a 60 year old granny with her boobies swinging to her waist, there's a little less pressure to be perfect. :) Our bodies are so varied, and kids shouldn't be taught to be ashamed of them.

But then, if people could see boobies everywhere, we'd be out of business.

On the beach last summer in San Sebastian, Spain. A naked old man bent over right in front of me, his nut sack thundering in a backward arc towards my forehead.
That's the only time I considered a ban on nudists on the beach.

There's 3 beaches in the city, all are topless and only one is nudist, but that's the surfers beach that I go to.


Families should take their kids to topless beaches, it becomes normal, or if they're like my 9 year old he thoroughly enjoys it and even points the exceptionally peachy ones...
