Anyone in Thailand?

I'm thinking of staying there for a year or so and service my clients from there (i'm a webdeveloper).

How are the internet connections there?

Any GFY'ers staying there? I'd love to pick your brain about some stuff..

Lilit 02-06-2009 05:52 AM

My friend's been there for almost 6 months now and she likes it pretty much.
Internet connection is good and cheap. The only problem - if you wanna stay for 1 year you'll have to get out of the country every 3 months and then come back another round of fun :)

kmanrox 02-06-2009 05:58 AM

lived here 7 years... internet is fine dude.

quiet 02-06-2009 06:15 AM

internet is good and pretty much everywhere. what are you going to do about visas?

retardednewbie 02-06-2009 06:28 AM

Internet is fast and cheap everywhere. With the Visa, you can just roadtrip or fly in and out of countries and it's cheap.

tranza 02-06-2009 06:32 AM

Maybe is fine, why would be bad?

The Duck 02-06-2009 06:34 AM

I wish I was

HorseShit 02-06-2009 07:42 AM

What's considered fine there? :) Most asian countries I've been to so far have max 512kbit 'broadband' for insane prices.

Have you started a company there?

ive got 5mbps for like 80$ a month

5mbps if you're using multi thread d/l accelerator or if you're d/ling a file locally cached... if downloading normal internet sites its more like speeds of 128k

Reak AGV 02-06-2009 10:21 AM

The internet speed isn't fabulous for the $30+- you're going to pay :)

Michael O 02-06-2009 11:53 AM

I will be there from April 19th and until Dec.
:warning:warning:warning:warning:warning:warning

If I recall correctly, his internet connection is 3mb.

quiet 02-06-2009 02:40 PM

Anyone who is saying the internet is great "anywhere" has clearly not traveled outside of the tourist areas.

In Bangkok the internet is great. Once you leave BKK, it's hit or miss based on where you are, but you can always find a signal, it's just a matter of what speed you will have.

A lot of porn sites are blocked in Thailand so get yourself a VPN (strongvpn.com) or a proxy list. They are blocked because porn is illegal in Thailand, including downloading it, uploading it, browsing it, producing it, selling it or even building adult websites. With that said, everyone does it with little problems, just don't let the world know what you are doing there.

There are also new visa rules. A "border run" to Cambodia no longer gives you a 30 day tourist visa. The new law only grants you 15 days at the border. That means you will be given 30 days upon entry into Thailand, then 15 days each time you make a border run, until you reach a total of 90 days. Once you reach 90 days, you must then leave Thailand for 90 days before you can return. However, if you have a specialty visa (Non Imm B, Work, Student...), this can be avoided and you only have to leave once every 3 months or in some cases, only once a year.

There is a wealth of information here: www.ThaiVisa.com Head to the forums or just search around it, all the info you will ever need is there.

Be sure to look me up. My contact is in my sig. Unless you've done a night of debauchery with Kman and myself, you haven't done Thailand. And don't worry, Kman travels with enough penicillin for everyone involved.

The 90 days in 180 days rule were removed when they changed it to 15 days on entries by land.
I am getting a double or hopefully a triple entry 60 days visa that each can be extended by 30 days.
I agree on the Thaivisa.com site I got all the info I needed there tons of good info.

I would LOVE that, I think I would be scarred for life afterwards but I wouldn't miss it :1orglaugh

kmanrox 02-07-2009 01:37 AM

dwb, they've removed most of those censored sites nowadays... for some reason gofuckyourself.com is the only domain i can't get to.. altho gfy.com is ok.. i can get to the major tubes, thehun and any other place i've tried... could be that i dont surf porn enough, but the days of every site with traffic being blocked appears to be over... ge off your ass and come back to the real world!

CybermedAndy 02-07-2009 01:53 AM

Just got back from Patong last month.. trip #7 there.. missing it bad already :(

mizmiz 02-07-2009 01:56 AM

I like bankok...Many Thai ladies..should visit again

jscott 02-07-2009 03:43 AM

i can view ALL sites nowdays with no blockage :) except for the sites that intentionally geo ip block from here
I pay 2200 baht (approx $65) for supposedly 8mbps, but when I check the speeds it's of course not that fast

WOW!!! I didn't know that. I'm on a 1 year visa multi-entry so have not had to deal with that silly BS in a year. I just heard about the 15 day rule and figured that was enough monkey business for the day and read something else.

I guess they figured keeping so many falang out for 90 days when they could be fucking them every 15 days for more money was the better route. Gotta love the Thais when it comes to figuring out ways to fuck us for more money. This one is brilliant. You know, I would have no problem paying 3 or 4 times the fee if we just didn't have to make any border runs. 15 days, 30 days, 90 days, 1 year... whatever. Just tell me how much to pay and don't make me leave.

See what happens when I'm not there? I leave and the country falls apart, kicks out the government and unblocks the internet. :1orglaugh
