I actually think the same about this, an avatar is an identity in a way, so that people read your words and in the corner of their eye they see your avatar and associate that with your posts, and if you are on the forum enough you start to recognize posters just by their avatar.

Having a female pic in your avatar has people assuming that your post is coming from that female's perspective.
