Do you remember when you spoke these words:

"What's the Internet?"

Do you remember when somebody first told you about the net?

Deej 02-19-2009 06:08 PM

Yes, I wish I had took some advice way back then... In it now, but would have been nicer then :thumbsup

Nicky 02-19-2009 06:16 PM

I can't really remember when I first heard of it but I got internet at home in early '95 but had it at school in '93-94. Was only 12 years old in '95 though.

JD 02-19-2009 06:19 PM

candyflip 02-19-2009 06:45 PM

Yep...I also remember the very earliest days of BBSing (with a 1200baud Zoltrix modem).

In college, we (a couple of student buddies) ran a phone cable from the PC-XT puter lab through the campus ceiling to the Dean's office and rigged it in to her private phone line.

For the next three months we used it to connect from the campus (in Toronto) to adult/porn BBSes all over the U.S.

Ran up a $3000 phone bill.

The Dean was not amused.

Its' incredible what kind of a paradigm shift the Internet has been. When you think about how it has impacted everything from business to entertainment to communication, its hard to remember what life used to be like. When I first got online, Netscape was king, IE didn't exist, 14.4 baud modem was lightening fast, cell phones were like dumbbells and a 250 MG hard drive was huge.

Moore's law has kicked in big time since then.

tranza 02-20-2009 06:55 AM

I was drinking orange juice, so I heard something about net, then I said "Mm, looks interesting"... So I continued drinking my orange juice...

Voodoo 02-20-2009 06:59 AM

No, back when I learned about it... it was "The Information Super Highway".

I was already on the "net" before the World Wide Web came out. One day in college I was in the physics library and asked the librarian a question. She said "have you tried Mosaic yet?" I'm like "What's Mosaic"? She said "it's on the computer and has pictures" I'm like "no way".

I remember sitting with some of my friends in the buttery in probably 1994 and seeing a commercial with a URL in it. I think it was Timex. We were like "This is gonna be biiiiig".

Anyway, that pretty much ended my physics career path and set me on the path to porn - with stops along the way owning a marketing company and a cell phone company.

For those first few years though hardly anyone I met outside of school really knew what the web was. They had usually heard of it though "Oh, that thing where you can see a picture of a girl sucking a donkey's cock?"

John-ACWM 02-20-2009 12:41 PM

yes....more than 10 years ago

minddust 02-20-2009 12:42 PM

LAJ 02-20-2009 01:41 PM

I remember back in early 1993 assisting a casting director for an audition and one of the lines in the script (for a commercial) was "have him put it in my email".

I had no idea what it meant and clearly none of the actors did either. One even said "what the fuck is email" and the other guy said "damned if i know".

ultimatebbwdotcom 02-20-2009 01:46 PM

Back in 94, one of my brick and mortar business partners said "we should look to get on the net, its the future", we kinda ignored him.

Tom_PM 02-20-2009 02:07 PM

I think I still have my 300 baud modem box. $199.99 BTW.

Tom_PM 02-20-2009 02:13 PM

My father was general manager in charge of programming at an ibm subcontractor, I remember "take your kids to work day" and it was rooms full of reel to reel "drives" (ya know, 6 foot tall drives lmfao) and they had a new invention.. daisy wheel printer. And I remember the punch card reader.. those fuckers would FLY so fast (bear in mind I was maybe 7 yrs old and I'm 44 now). He'd bring home his work on wide green/white printer paper and stacks of punch cards. I can remember him telling me about "bits" and "bytes" and even what he termed "nibbles" (4 bits).
Really sucked that he died so young as he was such a pioneer with this computer thingy.

The Seduction of Art 02-20-2009 02:13 PM

I remember when "The Web" was something in cyberpunk novels.

Quagmire 02-20-2009 02:40 PM

I did some digging and found some stuff with my name attached to it from waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1988 on ParaNet.

I'm so fucking old school. Rockin' a Timex Sinclair with a Mighty Mo pocket modem. Bitchz be crazy for 300 baud.

NetwErk GUrl 02-20-2009 03:45 PM

Did anyone else play games on the graphic BBS INN Or ImagiNationNetwork?

It's pretty much the first thing I did on the internet...

chelis 02-20-2009 03:58 PM

long time ago, '93 or '94

it was defined as the net of nets
