New York Post's Cartoon Apology

wow this takes us back to the beginning racism is still alive:2 cents: then if blacks lash out then their called monsters:disgust

This evening, the New York Post issued a half-apology for Wednesday's notorious stimulus/chimp cartoon which inspired outraged among many readers.

Though editor Col Allen defended the cartoon in a statement earlier this week, the editorial goes a bit further: "to those who were offended by the image, we apologize."

But the apology repeated Allen's attack on the cartoon's critics: "To them, no apology is due."

Here is the apology:

Wednesday's Page Six cartoon - caricaturing Monday's police shooting of a chimpanzee in Connecticut - has created considerable controversy.

It shows two police officers standing over the chimp's body: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill," one officer says.

It was meant to mock an ineptly written federal stimulus bill.

Period.

But it has been taken as something else - as a depiction of President Obama, as a thinly veiled expression of racism.

This most certainly was not its intent; to those who were offended by the image, we apologize.

However, there are some in the media and in public life who have had differences with The Post in the past - and they see the incident as an opportunity for payback.

To them, no apology is due.

Sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon - even as the opportunists seek to make it something else.

that cartoon shows the extreme of using "freedom of speech" to reinforce police brutality first, and second, animal cruelty. That's obvious. As the chimp reference, that's not clear they refer to Obama. However, the reason the cartonist used the chimp figure is not clear and it should be explained. That's the people's right to know of context and also its a moral obligation for the cartoonist to do it.

Nice to know they did that!!

i honestly dont think it was racist cartoon, people blow these things up.

George Bush was compared to a monkey for 8+ years, no one said a thing.

republican Party put this out, now THIS IS RACIST.

*note the ribs, watermelon, fried chicken, food stamps, now THAt is racist. SHow any of the above in the NY Post toon? Nope, not present.

for something to be racist it has to have racist elements in it. A monkey by default is not racist, the entire piece needs to be evaluated.

The above shows how something can be racist vs a toon of monkey being shot is not. It seems they are more upset b this cartoon than the OBAMA BUCKS the REPUBLICAN PARTY put out during campaign.

Wait a minute! Maybe I'm missing your point, but police brutality? The chimp was ripping the face off a lady. Shooting the chimp was the only option available. How is this police brutality? Should they have waited for an animal control specialist with a dart gun to show up while the chimp was killing the woman?

I can see animal cruelty, sort of, by having the chimp as a pet in the first place, as the outcome could have been predictable. Wild animals do not make good pets, and things like this are likely to happen.

i guess its out the box for you who signed the current stimuls bill:disgust but i knew it would be comedy central comments im not surprised:mad:

Fletch XXX 02-20-2009 08:25 AM

I am as against animal cruelty as you can be, even stopping eating animals as to not be a hypocrit over it, and I agree. This wasnt really animal cruelty.

I read somewhere... The woman who called 911 was BEGGING cops to come and kill the chimp because he was attacking.

I understand those who want to save the chimp, but fact is that simnply cannot happen all the time when a 200lb animal is ripping the face off of someone. The owner though should be held responsible however,...

but this isnt a case of animal cruelty, stop eating hamburgers if you care about animal cruelty. otherwise you dont.

JamesK 02-20-2009 08:26 AM

oh my god they shot a chimp

Brujah 02-20-2009 08:27 AM

They used to compare Bush to the chimpanzee all the time too. This is all ridiculous.

brassmonkey 02-20-2009 09:23 AM

i guess we will never break down the wall between white and black

moeloubani 02-20-2009 10:17 AM

racist = comparing that monkey to obama because hes black

it seems the only ones doing that were the ones asking to have the ad pulled...maybe they need to take a look at themselves first

damn thank you :thumbsup

PornMD 02-20-2009 04:33 PM

They probably should have been smarter and used a different animal just in case this backlash might happen. Still though, agreed with all those who think it's racist for someone to assume the chimp was meant to represent Obama. Now if they had said "they'll have to find someone else to SIGN the next stimulus bill," there wouldn't be any question.

bronco67 02-20-2009 07:30 PM

Anyone who is offended by that cartoon should go back to High School and listen to the part about how and where Bills are written.

brassmonkey 02-20-2009 07:36 PM

i was just putting it out there didnt expect white folks to say much :thumbsup

haha.. what the fuck are you smoking? Animal cruelty? Police brutality? they shot a 200 pound rampaging chimpanzee that was ripping a woman to pieces, basically tore her face off, and who has no spent something like 20 hrs in surgery. Even its owner was stabbing it with a knife and begging the cops to come shoot it to save her friend in her 911 call.

i can't believe how fucking nuts some of you jackasses are. a cartoon according to you has to come with a disclaimer from the artist to clarify the joke... and he has a "moral obligation" to do so?

holy shit.

One cunt sending out a mailer to her cute little girls club does not equate to the "republican party" sending it out. But you knew that already.

That's not a racist depiction, that's an example of equal rights in its' purest of forms.

Blacks routinely make jokes about themselves and their love of bbq, watermelon, chicken. I've heard it, you've heard it and when the jokes are told, we've all laughed (cause it was fucking funny) and exactly the goal of all the jokes to begin with.

To say that blacks can do/say something and it's ok but a white person can't do/say the same thing is what's racist.

If anyone adheres to that type of (ok for me but not you because of your race) mentality, then that is what is racist and maybe they would like to go back to the days of who gets to sit where on a bus or separate water fountains or ordering food from the back window of restaurants.

It's equal rights - not special rights - and that goes both ways. If it's ok for you to do/say, then it's ok for me too. There is no in between....

People really need to get over themselves sometimes. I don't go all "up in arms" any time I hear a "white dude's can't dance" sketch. I laugh my ass off...
