Aquariums for an office?
 

I'm thinking it would be nice to have an aquarium in my office downtown, any one give me tips on what equipment to get that is nice to have and what fish I should get?

It would be so awesome if I could order shit online and make this easy lol :pimp

I had fish in my office once. Big tank, 350 letres. Sticks to high heaven too. Spend too much time making sure the water was right temp and clean, then cleaning their shit every few days. yuck.

I got ants instead. I gave them leftover lunch for food. I had a queen that had about 50,000 workers. Funny to watch as well.

Depends on what you want. I just set up a 34 gallon "Nano cube" saltwater reef tank in my office, made by Solana. Total cost was $915, included the tank, metal halide light with lunar LEDs built in, pump, protien skimmer, and stand.

You can do it much cheaper of course if you want freshwater, and have a much bigger tank.

I've been keeping aquariums my entire life. The biggest piece of advice I give newbies is "don't go small." It might seem like a desktop tank 2-5 gallons or even a 10 gallon is a good, cheap, safe bet, but the smaller things are, the faster things can go wrong. Freshwater is by far the cheaper way to go, and although most people gravitate toward saltwater fish, there are some really beautiful freshwater fish and some really cool oddball species that can create a unique freshwater tank.

Pay someone to do it! Saltwater is the best and go atleast 200 gallons. I used to do custom home and office reef and shark tanks, averaging 1000 gallons in college and we did more repair work for people who fucked things up and killed thousands of dollars in fish than anything. It's a money pit if you don't do it right! Find people with nice tanks in the area and get referrals.

I second the "pay someone to do it" approach. Since this is for an office, you want stuff to look nice, not stink, and not cause a mess or be a huge time sinkhole. A novice starting a tank would not be a good deal.

Many companies do this sort of thing. Basically you pick out the tank size/shape and type (salt, reef, freshwater) a general idea of what fish, and they do the rest including weekly/bi-weekly maintenance. Call a local pet store (not a petsmart - a local store) for recommendations.

I wanted to do this too... Unfortunately our lease covenant precludes them specifically. Doh!

Koi fishes are nice fish in the office.

I like this but this is the worst you can do to a fish. Its like putting a perosn in a 2*2 cell.

You should get African Cichlids...they need brackish water (mix of salt and fresh water) way easier than salt water...and the fish are very colorful. They are just a little territoral. If you were to go with a standard size tank...55 gallon looks great. My dad was one of the 1st in NY to breed these fish when they 1st came out in the 70's. He sold hundreds of them to pet shops...

If you have money to spend I would get a custom tank, acrylic sphere/circle type tank...glass tanks are dangerous. Someone I now had a 250 gallon salt water tank...and the glass gave way...water leaked through 2 other apartments.

Also goldfish (not the small orange ones) are easy, and here in Chinatown they have tanks of these big bright orange/red and white ones...they look insane. Not as big as Koi.

It really depends on so many things.. Salt or fresh? Do you want to maintain yourself? Salt water tanks are a lot more fun to have but more expensive and A LOT more work. I have a small fresh water tank I barely touch, cool little fish, a catfish etc..and salt water tank.

In the Salt tank I have a stingray, a puffer, a Wrasse, a Tang, and a Lion Fish
