Bogus conviction leaves man without wife, job

This is sad...

(CNN) -- Tim Masters squarely blames Fort Collins, Colorado, police and prosecutors for his inability to land gainful employment and for his not having a wife and kids at this stage in his life.

In 1987, Masters became the prime suspect in the slaying of Peggy Hettrick, a 37-year-old found in a field near his house. Among the reasons police said they focused on Masters was that he failed to report the body after he found it and his childhood drawings and stories suggested he was fixated on death.

Masters was convicted of murder in 1999, but a judge last year threw out the conviction and released him from prison, citing new evidence that did not implicate Masters. Masters now has a lawsuit pending against several police officers, ex-prosecutors and the city.

The city of Fort Collins has asked a federal judge to dismiss the case.

Now 37, Masters sat down for a phone interview with a CNN reporter who covered his case and subsequent release. He said he still holds a grudge against the police and prosecutors who put him behind bars.

I watched a documentary a while back that followed several guys in the same situation where they were wrongly accused then eventually released and what their lives were like after it.

Like this guy most states don't even expunge your record. One guy was supposedly a rapist (he was picked up because he had a red shirt on, the DNA didn't match, but the girl said it was him. Eventually they got the guy who the DNA matched and he looked a little bit like the guy that had gotten charged. He served 13 years) and his record stilled showed him as a convicted rapist. He still has to put that he is a convicted felon on job applications. He says he carries around the papers showing the overturning of the charges so he can explain it if he happens to get stopped or questioned.

Another was a similar situation in Florida where a guy was found to be the wrong guy, but he ended up staying in jail 1 1/2 years longer because the DA kept fighting his release on technicalities even though he admitted this guy was innocent. When the guy finally got out the DA tried to tell him there was no hard feelings that he was just doing his job. I don't think anyone would have blamed him if he punched that dude.

I really hate it when things like that happen. I'm so glad there's DNA now. You know I have to wonder how many people were put to death or spent their prime years in jail before DNA was available

I believe there is a saying that goes along something like this: "it's better to let 10 guilty people go free, than to put one innocent man behind bars".

Looks like another banning may be in order to rid GFY of the problem once and for all.

cops, judges and prosecutors are all pieces of shit who only care about furthering their career and not about what is right.
