My tomtom 930 was around $500 when i got it, its pretty sweet, now-days id get one that did realtime info

I had a Garmin on my last car. Thought it was great. Better than the one that came built into my current car.

Don't buy a TomTom... the maps are old as fuck (more than 4 years outdated) and they charge $90 for map updates... I have one I paid $400 for and it's worthless except for highway travel.
