Router help needed
I am trying to set something up, and I am failing miserably. Here's the deal:
This week, I switched from Comcast (boooooooooo comcast) to AT&T high speed dsl. With that signup, I got a free router/modem gateway. It is a 2Wire Gateway. That set up is back in my room, with the desktop connected to it. My wireless connection works, so no problem there. That leaves me with a now-unused wireless router. I got it when I had vonage, and after that, I just used it for the wireless when I had Comcast. It is a Linksys wrtp54g v1. What I want to do is hook the Linksys up to my DirecTV hd dvr box. That will allow me to access VOD, schedule online, etc. If I have understood my reading correctly, I need the Linksys to act as a switch instead of a router. I have followed all the instructions on this page about 10 times now. The only thing I have not done is to change the IP on the Linksys. I have not done that becasue a) When I am on the desktop, and do an ipconfig/all, it shows that the 2Wire has a different IP than the Linksys shows when it it hooked into my laptop. b) When I try following their instructions and do change the IP first, I then lose the ability to access the Linksys router's web access page. It does the equivalent of a 404. When I hook the Linksys router up to the dvr, it goes through and checks the ip, gateway, subnet mask, and dns. It (the process) gives me check marks for all those things. I have them set to match what is on the 2Wire router, with the exception of the IP. That I have set to the Linksys router's info. But when it tries to connect to the internet, it fails. Does anyone see anything obvious that I am doing wrong? I got sucked into trying to figure it out last night, and lost about 4 hours of my life. Today I have resisted the urge to mess with it so far, but it is a siren song trying to lure me in and smash me against the rocks of my own ineptness. :) |
You aren't trying to connect the 2wire gateway and the linksys router through wireless, right?
If so, that Linksys model doesn't offer that capability. How many ports does that 2wire Gateway have? Four(like this one does), correct? If so, you can run a cable directly to your DVR into one of the additional ports. If you were trying to avoid running a cable to your DVR, then get one of these options: Wireless Ethernet adapter 1 Wireless Ethernet Adapter 2 Wireless Ethernet Adapter 3 Then again, I don't know more about what you're trying to do. So in case I was off, I'll wait for your response. |
Yep, I was trying to do it wirelessly, and thought I could based on the responses here.
The 2Wire does have 4 ports. Running the cable would mean getting someone down in my crawl space to run ethernet the whole length of my house, so I'd like to avoid that, if possible. When I was reading, I kept seeing reference to putting dd-wrt onto the Linksys, but I am not even sure what that does. My technical knowledge does have it's limits. :1orglaugh:1orglaugh I will check out those adapter links, thank you *very* much for them, and for the help. :) |

There are routers and access points that can pickup a wi-fi signal and redistribute it to an ethernet lan as a bridge, but the options I gave are a lot less expensive and technically easier. And yes, installing dd-wrt does allow you to bridge the two together through wireless by creating a "Client mode". As you've gotten this far, try it. The instructions are fairly well documented. Happy Flashing! |
teehee
Not familiar with the terminology, but if 'brick' means what I think it does, I'd say the odds of me bricking it are high. ;) Thanks to you both, it is very much appreciated. It may be a few days before I get to this, but I will let you guys know how it worked out for me. Or didn't work out. ;) |
Get a Netgear print server ( with 4 lan ) like :
