i upgraded my notepad, but i also upgraded from Vista to XP so perhaps that's why mine's running smooth ;)

You mean you downgraded to XP? XP is shit compared to Vista.
Got Vista on my new i7 runs beautiful, although at first had a few issues but no way will I go back to XP.

There will always be haters. I'd never go back to XP, Vista works great for me.
