Would you consider a pageview to be a "hit"?

I just looked on analytics and saw I have 3.7 million pageviews a month. So would it be accurate to say Im getting 4 million hits a month? or is that wrong?

hit is usually a unique ip hitting your site. A pageview can be that same IP viewing multiple pages, multiple times

Correct me if I'm wrong, cuz I smoke a lot of pot

Technically, a hit is a server request so it includes calls for all objects. So you probably have 10+ million hits and maybe 1.5 million uniques.

You're wrong. Nobody listen to what he said.

I thought a hit was a request.
If a html page was up and also had 4 graphics on it. One unique person visiting that page would cause 5 hits (requests for each graphic and the html).

Was also why many early hit counters were so damn funny as you could hit refresh and they would jump up 100 since each reload made 100 new requests.

IMO a hit is someone who enters your site and can be counted several times in say 24 hours. A unique hit being a unique IP hitting you once in 24h or several times but only counted as one.

no offence intended, nicky and Bored, but your "opinion" is not "fact" here, and only helps to confuse people in the way that you yourselves are confused on this issue

mynameisjim (and some others here) have it correct

yeah none taken. Always open to the 'right' answer. Thanks for correcting me, as I hate bad information just as much as the next guy :)

a hit can be an image request

d-null 04-05-2009 03:10 PM

and to answer the op, a pageview would generally be a single url page on your site (ie. a link that the surfer clicks or enters the url to in the address bar)... so if 1 surfer visits 10 different pages on your site, that counts as 1 unique, but 10 pageviews (and possibly many many more "hits" depending on what your actual site consists of)

BVF 04-05-2009 03:13 PM

I only judge my traffic by unique hits....someone counting pageviews is kind of like a sponsor using join page hits to determine your ratio.

That is correct as far as I know. I hate when people say.. "I got 100,000 hits to my site this month" because that doesnt mean shit, its unique visitors that I watch.
