Police have revealed details of the gruesome death of a Sydney man who was shot multiple times in the head with a nail gun.

Detectives from Strike Force Renfree, set up to investigate the death of Chen (Anthony) Liu, have released graphic X-ray images of Mr Liu's skull.

Mr Liu's badly decomposed body was found in marshland in Sydney's south last year.

Two children, aged nine and 14, found the body after returning home from a canoeing trip in Oatley Bay in of evening on November 1.

Police battled rising tides to retrieve Mr Liu's body in marshland off Morshead Drive, Connells Point.

Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Mark Newham said post-mortem examination results revealed Mr Liu was shot repeatedly in the head with a high-powered nail gun.

"Similar types of nail guns can fire nails up to 85 millimetres long," he said.

Police are appealing for information from anyone who might have seen Mr Liu's blue 2005 Range Rover Sport 4WD in Rockdale or Connells Point around October 19 last year.

Detectives believe the four-wheel drive could have been used to transfer Mr Liu's body to the marshland and have pleaded for help from the Australian public.
