Encoding HDV Content on a PC ?

What do you use to encode HDV content on a PC ? I can open this fine on a Mac under Quick Tim and and use FCP to edit etc

stickyfingerz 05-17-2009 05:03 PM

I use adobe premiere cs3 here. As a heads up if you use the trial version it doesn't include the hdv plugin you need. Vegas should work too.

mikesouth 05-17-2009 05:15 PM

vegas works fine

helps to have an i7 but a quad runs fine

MaDalton 05-17-2009 05:32 PM

you just want to encode or you want to edit? i am confused

I've been editing/encoding HDV with Sony Vegas Pro 8 up until about 6 months ago when I replaced our video editing machine with a Mac Pro.

I was using a quad-core Vista machine. Worked fine....

if you just want to encode a few clips this one works well - has lots of profiles and has no problems with HDV

We use Sorenson Media Version 5

Jim_Gunn 05-17-2009 10:08 PM

My main video workstation is a Core i7 pc running Windows Vista 64-bit and the Adobe Premiere CS3 & CS4 suites to do HDV capturing, editing and making tapes plus some other apps like VideoCharge & Sorenson Squeeze to do other video encoding jobs.

NaughtyRob 05-17-2009 10:14 PM

Most new programs do it... I use Pinnacle, cheap and does the job.

How's the i7? I'm still doing bulk of my work off Core2 (Q6600) and that even still blows me away. Had my eye on a decent i7 setup for a minute though. You use any off processor accelerators?

jay23 05-17-2009 10:58 PM

Any one use CS4 ? I saw a demo at NAB of http://www.rapihd.com/ , very cool stuff.

I can't wait to see more being done with cuda...

perfectodollars-gabrio 05-18-2009 02:30 AM

i like vegas as well and use it, and if you want to tune it up your machine a bit more, assuming that you have Xp 32 bit, check out this handy trick - one time microsoft did it right, applies if you have 3+gb of ram on a 32 bit machine, it will NOT use 100% of your ram but you get a nice boost and yes you see the difference.

other than that for encoding HD video, im on a core2 quad Q9300 overclocked to 3.3ghz w/ 4gb of ram and it works good, it all depends how many filters you apply as well.. the more filters (i.e. sharpen etc etc), the slower it goes..

peedy 05-18-2009 03:11 AM

I like Vegas on the PC side however the interface is much different than the FCP your used to. Premier would probably work better if your used to FCP

SGS 05-18-2009 03:13 AM

We use CS3 here and it's a breeze.

If you mean you have a source HDV file you may need a copy of QT pro on the PC to view/convert it.

I got QT Pro, it will not display the video but play the audio

Lance69 05-24-2009 02:39 PM

This HDV file is an m2t extension right?
To convert it you could use VLC for free, Procoder3, Sorenson, straight out of Vegas, etc..

Yep, its from FCP. I can use VLC to play the video. Since I want Flash and VC1 Sorenson may be the best choice. No idea whats going on with Procoder development , have not seen a new version for years (and I own 10 copies)

Apple does not have a QT version that can play HDV on PC, only on Mac

MaDalton 05-24-2009 02:59 PM

usually you just need a mpeg2 codec. look for "mega codec pack" - comes with media player classic. plays everything

Lance69 05-24-2009 03:55 PM

Media Player Classic is awesome. I agree Sorenson would be your best choice.

bronco67 05-24-2009 07:18 PM

OMG you have to use a PC? Everyone knows PC's can't do anything.

yeah, dude, buy a copy of Vegas video. It's great.

DAMNMAN 05-24-2009 07:35 PM

yeah, and costs only $5000 or so

emac 05-25-2009 08:50 AM

the quicktime alternative is good. For the editing
i think Edius can handle HDV well, we havent tried premiere since FCP still rocks on the macpro :thumbsup
