Goddamn eye glasses are expensive!

I just left the eye doctor and had to drop almost $500 on a new pair of glasses. And that's AFTER insurance. :(

I should stop being such a wimp and get LASIK.

Let me guess, you went to lens crafters. :1orglaugh

After Shock Media 05-19-2009 06:59 PM

Did you price check at say Costco?

riddler 05-19-2009 07:00 PM

doctors offices rip you the fuck off with eyeglasses, frames direct all the way for me, i always save like 300$..

i go to the doctor for a eye exam which is usually 70 bucks or so without insurance then try on glasses find ones i like then goto frames direct.

Sly 05-19-2009 07:02 PM

Never ever ever buy from the doctors. You can buy them online for like $30. For years I wore contacts and refused to get a backup pair of glasses because I knew they would be $350 at least... until I looked around online and found some great pairs of glasses for $30 .

Not at all. An optometrist in the Mission. Great guy, very professional, but when it came to the glasses I got raped.

Those glasses better make me see the fucking future.

Sosa 05-19-2009 07:12 PM

Yeah no kidding. I had my checkup a month or so ago and they want to up my prescription in my lens a little bit. I'm expecting $200-$300 after insurance pays their 25% or so.

BSleazy 05-19-2009 07:23 PM

Ya it sucks. I haven't had insurance in a while and had to pay about $300 for a pair of glasses. When I had insurance I don't think I paid anything.

BVF 05-19-2009 07:26 PM

I made sure to buy an extra pair of glasses just days before my prescription expired....They're safely waiting in the closet for when I eventually break or lose the ones I have.....But since I wear contacts, I don't give a fuck what the glasses look like so I get frames from the sale wall at Lenscrafters.

Ayla_SquareTurtle 05-19-2009 07:32 PM

Damn! You can get them for $99 directly from your doctor here, and if you catch them on the right day, you can get the glasses for free if you buy the contacts ($99-129 most places for basic lenses)

I split between glasses and contact lenses about half the time. I still have some disposables left, so I'll order contacts when I go pick up my frames. There was no way I could wrap my head around spending well over $500 for both glasses and contacts today. Ridiculous.

Monique Niccole 05-19-2009 07:57 PM

I really should have shopped around. Frames Direct has some good prices.

Is yours that bad or do you feel it is a storewide issue?

mynameisjim 05-19-2009 08:38 PM

Just so you guys know, Lenscrafters will deal like a mother fucker. You can haggle all the way down to 50% off or more. That's why they have salespeople. Let the sales person spend a good 20 minutes on you then balk at the price. Suddenly they will remember all of kinds specials that are running. Last pair I got there originally rung up at $485 with everything and I ended up paying $220 something.

The salespeople have a ton of discretion over price and the margins on lenses and frames is HUGE.

I know they all go to a wholesale grinder, but I think lenscrafters lenses and coatings are better quality than costco lenses, and of course the frames are way better.

True Fax.

The Dolce and Gabbana in my avatar were like $150 total.. frames, lenses, everything.. at costco...

lacuna 05-19-2009 10:44 PM

Depends on what you get. My prescription Oakleys with transition lenses definitely set me back... :thumbsup

John-ACWM 05-20-2009 03:59 AM

Not just the eye doctors rip us off, they all do.

CarlosTheGaucho 05-20-2009 04:10 AM

Everywhere the same, minimum of 300 USD for say a little bit better glasses here too.

I guess they're making about 1 300 - 1 500 pct. profit a piece

Next time I'm buying I'll do a major research, I'm sure I'll find someone who'll be selling at 50 pct. off or something, cause they're making profit anyway.

There's a problem with that though. Most of those sites don't list the full measurements for everything on the glasses. So you're taking a risk of them not fitting unless you use a site that list it all. Even then you don't know the measurements unless you have a pair of glasses that fit you just right. But yes if you do it right you can getcha a good pair online for almost nothing.

Vicious_B 05-20-2009 06:11 AM

I got a great deal at Lenscrafters for my glasses. They had a special and I also got a major discount because of my insurance. They weren't covered at all by the insurance but it knocked almost $130 off my lenses.
Contact wise I always order mine from www.coastalcontacts.com. I like the real bright colored ones Clearly colored but they have really great deals on all the brands.

Voodoo 05-20-2009 06:12 AM

Both of my pairs are Prada and I didn't pay that much, even without insurance. You're getting ripped off.

alexchechs 05-20-2009 07:57 AM

$500 for a pair of glasses is pretty damn steep. Even spending $200-$300 is my limit.

pornocruto 05-20-2009 08:25 AM

I can understand $500.... But AFTER insurance, fuck me, thats a bit harsh.

viki 05-20-2009 10:23 AM

Just my lenses cost close to $300 because of astigmatism + avoiding the coke bottle look. It sucks.

HorseShit 05-20-2009 10:29 AM

just get an eye transplant

i think its a storewide issue. ive had a few friends say the same thing about there local costco.

Barefootsies 05-20-2009 11:08 AM

Agreed, you get raped. :disgust

I went last year for new glasses. I picked up a pair of sunglasses (for jetskiing) and my normal one's. They cost me $1000.00 between the two.

When I HAD insurance, it was still $400-500.00 every time but once. I worked for this one telco, that USED to have some good insurance. I paid $25.00 my first year. That was all inclusive. However, it changed next contract. If you wore contacts, almost everything covered. Glasses, almost nothing. Like the lense scratching, and tint and exam or some shit.

My lenses alone were $188 so they didn't end up all super-thick. I've got horrible eyesight too.

collegeboobies 05-20-2009 11:59 AM

i think you got ripped off

I have lenses like that also. Think I ended up paying around $250 total for lenses and frames when all was said and done. If the woman hadn't mentioned that I still get a discount with insurance even though they don't cover the glasses I would have paid close to $400.

dready 05-20-2009 12:03 PM

I just got a pair in the mail today for free from a big online promotion. Their normal prices are $38 to $98 if you want designer glasses like Gucci, Calvin Klein, etc. That includes lenses. Special lenses cost a little more.

starpimps 05-20-2009 12:14 PM

just spent 2500 on prk laser eye..out for a week+ work wise but now my vision is great.

Lasik is faster healing time but i do plan on getting punched in the face numerous times so it would not have been smart for me to get lasik

Twistys Tim 05-20-2009 12:27 PM

I the two years before I had lazik, I lost a pair of Jean Paul Gautier glasses, a lovely pair of tortoise shell Calvin Klein glasses, and a pair transition lenses glasses. I have saved money - bigtime - since having lazik :)
