Another plane crash

A French passenger aircraft carrying 228 people has disappeared off the coast of Brazil, airline officials say.

Air France told CNN the jet was traveling from Rio de Janeiro to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris when radio contact was lost.

The airline said flight AF447 was carrying 216 passengers in addition to a crew of 12. The aircraft is listed as an Airbus A330.

State radio reported a crisis center was being set up at Charles de Gaulle where the plane had been due to land at 11.15 a.m. local time.

Reports said an air force search and rescue operation was underway around the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha.

Most plane crashes happen during/close to takeoff/landing.
Looks like it wasn't the case here, as the plane went from Rio to Paris.

Considering no communication with air traffic cointrol proceeding the crash, it looks like the plane likely just crashed into the ocean, leaving no chance for survivors. Crashing into ocean is like crashing into ground...

Sarah_Jayne 06-01-2009 06:36 AM

It says something of the time when people will take a plane crash in stride just as long as it wasn't terrorism.

scary... I was on that same flight (AF 447) and probably that exact same plane (A330) back in November when I visited Rio.

Air France is a big gateway airline for a lot of places around the world. So, as this was a flight to Paris, there would be a lot of people making connections.

If you ever want to see the remnants of the old European empires, look at the the routes of their national airlines. That particuarly goes for roots into various parts of Africa and South America. When I was a travel agent, there are places you can only get people into on Air France because they are former French colonies, some you can only get them into via British Airways because they were part of the the British empire, etc. The one I bet most wouldn't think of is Belgium. Their former national airline, Sabena, was great for getting people into 'weird' places in Africa that nobody else went. They only went because they used to be Belgian colonies.
