Afraid of heights?

Half Dome is a granite dome in Yosemite National Park, located in northeastern Mariposa County, California, at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley ? possibly Yosemite's most familiar sight. The granite crest rises more than 4,737 ft (1,444 m) above the valley floor.

The park estimates that about 50,000 hikers use the cable handrails to climb Half Dome each year.

borked 06-14-2009 06:49 AM

everything has it's risks - some more than others. Just cos there's a cable and wooden steps, I reckon a big chunk of those 50k/yr think there's little danger....and the guy that died was one of them

woj 06-14-2009 06:50 AM

That's pretty cool, will have to go there one day :thumbsup

Atticus 06-14-2009 06:56 AM

As a child I was deathly afraid of heights. We lived in a 2 story house and even going down the stairs bothered me.

When I was 14 my family climed Ayers Rock in Australia and I was forced to join them, otherwise I would be left behind with relatives I didnt know very well. It was terrifying at first but once I got going, I kept going and by the time I got to the top my fear of heights had vanished. From that day on I had zero fear of heights. Very weird. lol

Scott McD 06-14-2009 07:16 AM

Yeah i don't think i'll be attempting that anytime soon... :Oh crap

Manowar 06-14-2009 07:25 AM

been up it once, a lot more dangerous that people assume

SilentKnight 06-14-2009 07:36 AM

Or you can do it this way...

CaptainHowdy 06-14-2009 07:38 AM

I'm afraid of "unnatural/man-made heights"... On top of a mountain I feel at home.

CDSmith 06-14-2009 07:55 AM

These are the only kind of half domes I'd be willing to climb..

Yngwie 06-14-2009 08:15 AM

I would definitely do that, but with my legs the way that they are with this leg disability it would be a stupid idea. I'd end up killing myself, but if it wasn't for that I would do that.

The one and ONLY video you need to see to flip yourself out

Even if you don't watch the whole thing, watch from 1:00 to 1:20 ;)

That vid was amazing. It reminded me a little of the speed climber guy on BBC`s Top Gear who raced Clarkson in an Audi.

The guy was nuts -
Sadly is no more... died on his final ever jump when his ropes crossed and melted..

Seeing the "safety" measures on that pic, it amazes me so many people climb it.

I mean, 2 ropes, and some wooden shit to walk on, between it: NOTHING.

Im sure IM not gonna be doing that on my trip later on.

Maybe they should install an elevator ;)
The incline isn't as steep as it looks in the first picture.

Think about it, it's the USA, leader in litigation: if it was too dangerous, you wouldn't be able to do it ;)

Amazing stuff. Just been reading about him...sad what happened. This truly is an extreme danger sport. The Top Gear guy was this guy - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Houlding

Rope swinging is that dangerous. You just have to cycle your ropes - I mean, that's what dynamic rope is built for. You need to get the angle of swing correct, to ensure that your freefall is on a slight arc etc.

No doubt he knew exactly what he was doing, but these things happen, I guess.

BTW, the wikipedia page for Leo Houlding says that he's climbed the 'Angel of the North'

If you're not aware of what it is, or want to see what it looks like, I've got a friend who has done it:
