So I got my BMX out of storage, Riding Anything Rules. Old school thread! [pic]
I ride dirt bikes too and all that good stuff, but a nice cassette hub ticking has a beautiful sound to it. Beats those ratchet sounding flywheels when we were kids.
Post your oldschool inspired rides! http://nokk.com/22.JPG |

I mentioned my old bmx to a guy that owns a bike shop....automatically he offered me 500 bucks for it. I wish I still had it, not for the money just the memorys. It was called a VDC Chunga , and had the works. Diamond Back turbo cranks, Hutch Pedals, Inch and 3/8 racing rimes...yada yada yada
Sorry no pic....their worth alot now cause the company went under some years back. |

If you are really old school you will remember the "elf" frames, so light that supposedly your average grommy doggy could toss those a whopping 20 feet.
Hence they were legendary, never saw one in person though. I'd def break that shit just doing bunny hops. |

this was a nice bike mine was already thrown! |
Classic movie "Rad"
http://trottoria.com/wordpress/wp-co...008/11/cru.jpg http://natsukashi.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/rad.jpg I had a mongoose and a redline. dont have any pictures. |
I use to ride a ton when I was younger. Did ramps and freestyle.
Some of the bikes I had.... PK Ripper http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_NvlmLCRKck...oto-lowres.jpg Redline RL-20 II http://bmxmuseum.com/image/finished_rl_20_ii_003_lg.jpg JMC Shadow http://bmxmuseum.com/image/jmcbsbuiltforshow_lg.jpg Haro Freestyler http://farm1.static.flickr.com/72/20...7a5a501964.jpg Skyway TA http://www.vintageredline.com/wp-con...e2-08white.jpg Had a bunch of other bikes but these stand out. The PK Ripper way my favorite |
RAD! lmao, as I recall this wasn't ever released on DVD in north america. Probably better off, I hear if you watch the "bike dance" scene now you will feel like a total douche.. All I'm sayin is that scene sucked back then.
This site sells "imports" hehe, ya sure buddy. Burn hard. http://www.rad-on-dvd.com/ Back in the day tho, remember the movie "thrasher"? Others do: http://www.google.com/search?q=thrasher+movie It is so old IMDB doesn't have an entry that I can find. Regardless, the bike dance shit was gay but the chick was kinda hot as I recall. I hope I don't give my age away, my ride was an mcs spider.
|
My first was a bmx-ified Schwin stingray, then a Roger Decosta which was basically a shorter wheelbased Mongoose (when they weren't shit) which an oval cutout instead of the circle in the gusset... then a red mongoose which when it got nicked up I took the finish off to make it chrome... then a Race Inc. which became another company... fuck all if I remember.
I always used spoked aluminum rims instead of Tuff wheels or those crappy Tuff wheel IIs... or those.. wtf were they called webbs? The rims that would explode on landing if you hit hard enough. |
I have watched "Rad" more than anyone on this board, i fucking GUARANTEE it! My buddy and i must have rented that movie over 50x and watched it over 200x.
Not kidding! We were fucking addicted LOL! |
OH THIS IS SOOO MY THREAD .. running out to take pix right now .. lol ..
|
SWEET! Lots of old school guys, this is cool. Growing up in So-Cal in the late 80's changed my life.
|
OK .. So here's the scoop .. I was actually sponsored by factory Mongoose in 1984-85.. this is a 1 of a kind frame .. I was at one point the fastest amatures on the planet .. 17 and over expert .... I know your all laughing calling bullshit.. I was in the movie "Rad" filmed in Airdrie Alberta .. I was on the CBC television series "The Beach Combers" as a stunt guy doing bike stuff .. I rode dogtown days with All the old school gods ..in the days I started .. I actually raced in the very first BMX race held in Canada .. I could go on for days .. I will drag out some old VHS and upload it .. lol .. this was my life .. well until woman and alcohol and porn ....
5 points for naming the front rim .. 5 points for naming HUBS .. and bonus points for the seat clamp .. http://promo.topchoicecash.com/files...ized%20BMX.JPG http://promo.topchoicecash.com/files...ized%20BMX.JPG http://promo.topchoicecash.com/files...ized%20BMX.JPG http://promo.topchoicecash.com/files...ized%20BMX.JPG |

Great pics, awesome tale! Would love to see the vids. :pimp :ak47: |
oh man does this thread ever bring back memories. I used to ride daily for years when I was a kid. I have owned a GT, Hutch, Mongoose a Direct Link (Limited Production Racing bike only 150 made) and a few other less mentionable.
The setup I had with the Hutch weighed 17 pounds and would have been lighter but I had a one piece crank and z-wheels which I could literally bend in half and they would spring right back into shape, super cool. I got those after breaking a few sets of aluminum rims, the only real set back was they were a bit heavier. |
BTW, I used to ride the bike pictured in Gibsons all the time. Place is so fucking small I remember taking my jeep off the road for a few months and just riding BMX, a modified honda 50 or race atv's if I couldn't walk.
I must say that I loved taking the above pictured bike to Vancouver, park and take it on the ferry. Or bus whatever. I built it custom from ordered components and mostly rode fast with just drops, like stair sets etc. I had a cool loop around Stanley over by the beach by Denman, to the science center. Then "pain and wastings" hastings and main back down to granville then back to apt or ferry depending. |
well when i was 13 i got my first real BMX a Mongoose for x-mas then like 2 years later i got a Mongoose Californian.. Man I loved that bike till it got stolen. I had a ton of extras added to it like a laid back seat post cause i was so tall and more expensive brakes and stuff. :disgust

Yo not trying to hype my own thread, look at my post history I just don't do that. Nonetheless, This is an awesome feel good thread. I feel like halcyon or some shit..
|
Haha, I owned a bunch of GT Performers when I was a kid. Didn't start racing till much later but did a lot of flatland on those old neon pink GTs with the kinked downtube.
Cool stuff there Jakethedog :thumbsup Definitely upload those vids if you get a chance. I still ride though, I actually spent this afternoon digging at our local trails. I ride a new school bike as those old school bikes had such awful geometry and they break instantly. Cool to see but impossible to ride those things. I give those old school guys credit though, those bikes sucked but they still shredded. Snapped this with my phone today at the trails. That's my BlackMarket Mob. Best hardtail on Earth :) If you old schoolers want to get back into jumping, that's the frame for you. Rides just like a BMX. http://www.amateursconvert.com/images/park.jpg |

Oh man it's too dark to take pics but I will be back in the AM. :arcadefre
Got so many bikes it's ridiculous. Redlines, Taxis, Skyway, Schwinns, Dynos, etc, etc, etc. |
had a ton of GT bikes. In storage still is my GT mach one.
Watched the movie Rad a serious amount of times. Used to watch parts before going out and riding. |

Front rim is aero something And of course the mks bear trap pedals |
Fucking bear claws were brutal, I've been scarred b4. Not just them but BMX is rough on the shins in general.

I can't lie. It is one of the first CDs I ever purchased. I will need to review the movie before I make any final judgments it has been a while. :2 cents: |

Rim was made by a VERY large common company ..it was made in very limited numbers and I actually did R&D on them .. MKS bear traps are WAY sharper .. total meat grinders .. I loved them but I wore them out ..filing and sharpening them all the time .. These are Suntour bear traps .. Hubs .. still to this day the #1 hub but hard as hell to find .. they were originally made for wheel chairs .. these wheels will still spin for 5 or more min Seat clamp .. well you'll never guess so I'll throw it in .. there were 5 made I did R&D for the company out of So-Cal .. truth is I can't even remember the name .. HAHA OH Bars .. they were banned because of width .. Diamond Back "Harry Leary's" like 36" wide .. lol |
Jake is officially the GFY BMX master. Not much else to say unless some new school foam pit bmx camp backflip fags have a product line they need to pitch.
|
Those cage pedals were pretty nasty. All the race guys run the clipless pedals these days so no more shin burgers. Freestyle guys all run the plastic pedals these days.
I know a few guys at the local track who could probably identify every part on that bike. If the parts are that rare they would probably even make an offer if you're selling. |

My fave bike was a GT with spokes alloys though, Sleeved grip handles , alloy cranks , Alloy everything. Good times bustin jumps down the levels before they built the homes in OC. Just like the movie "E.T" lol If I got a nickle for every shin dig :1orglaugh so thats the bike huh alias?? |

Hubs look very familiar, but it's been a while. DK? |
I like that bike its a classic
|
BTW, what year is that Macneil frame? I know Jay Miron started Macneil a while back but I forget exactly when.
Can't be too old. Looks like some S&M bars and forks, possibly some Profile cranks. Pretty solid setup. :) |

Yep, milfs like it for some reason.. . "nice bike.. ." |
ahahaha - great thread!
brings back memories. unfortunately my parents only bought me a cheap "BMX 2000" and i was always envious when i saw the other kids with the cooler bikes. and still it's a mystery to me why i never broke any bones at that time, it's not that i haven't tried ;) |
Quote:
This Macneil has a 22" top tube for taller riders and therefore is called the "duece duece", I guess this year's is getting slimmer tubes: http://www.macneilbmx.com/blog/wp-co...87-625x416.jpg I had a guy working for me who was also a bike mechanic, he hooked up the bike properly. Fixing the brakes, added new pads went over it all. |
i had one when i was boy, but i ruined him
