I just got stung by a bark scorpion

I woke up about an hour ago, slipped on some shorts and a jersey to run down stairs and make some coffee. I was having a smoke in the garage while the coffee was brewing. I go to the kitchen to pour myself a cup as I feel like someone is putting out a cigarette on my left side of my abdomen. I lift my shirt up and there is a 3 inch long scorpion. I screamed like a little girl and tried to flick it off. I think it only got me once and I killed it.

I looked online and it's a bark scorpion (the worst) but really not a whole lot I can do, compress the sting with some ice and take an aspirin, and pretty much be ready for a 20 - 30 hour ride of dizziness, numbness and aggravation.

What a way to start the week..

Sebastian

~Ray 06-22-2009 08:44 AM

I've been hit 3 times. sucked everytime.

AssPirate 06-22-2009 08:46 AM

I feel for you man. I hate scorpions!

Jman 06-22-2009 08:46 AM

I will stick with the bugs in Quebec....

Sucks for you Sebastien, hope it's not to rough of a ride.

getmouthy 06-22-2009 08:48 AM

A buddy of mine got stung twice in a week. He described the pain the same way.. hang in there

JenniDahling 06-22-2009 08:48 AM

Did you twitter it when it happened?:thumbsup

Just kidding doll, that sucks! I've been stung a number of time by bees and wasps but never by a scorpion, although i had a few close calls with centipedes when growing up in Hawaii. Hope your arm feels better soon, just keep the ice on it and take some antihistamines for the reaction and Motrin for the swelling.

alias 06-22-2009 08:59 AM

That sucks, good luck. Maybe it won't be as bad as you are expecting.

badboy69 06-22-2009 09:06 AM

I HATE bugs we don't have shit like that here. Hang in there.:pimp

st0ned 06-22-2009 09:09 AM

That sucks man. I moved up to the north side of town about a year ago and it is scorpion infested. As I was taking a shower last night I saw one float by in the water. I am calling a pest control place today to come into my house, don't want to chance one of my kids getting stung, it would be potentially deadly to them. Hope your recovery is as good as it can be.

punker barbie 06-22-2009 09:09 AM

omg you poor thing thats horrible. time to get your place exterminated and buy a cat.

czarina 06-22-2009 09:09 AM

it'd be a good idea to keep the phone nearby in case you go into anaphylactic shock (or however the heck you spell that)

LeRoy 06-22-2009 09:12 AM

That sux .

I thought those things killed ya :(

Yep, cats are wonderful scorpion hunters. :)

fuzebox 06-22-2009 09:43 AM

WTF they have scorpions in Vegas! Here I thought I'd be leaving such things behind :(

Sebastian Sands 06-22-2009 09:44 AM

I am still doing ok, try to just go on with the day altough I am having flares of dizziness and it still hurts like a mofo, but from what I read that was to be expected.

hahahahaha!!!!! :1orglaugh:1orglaugh im glad u live 2 talk about it i was stung by 1 of Arizonas most poisonous when i was a kid it felt like a bunch of needles pushing on my skin it was fucked up

d-null 06-22-2009 09:48 AM

get well soon, that always pisses me off when an insect attacks me for no good reason, got stung by a huge wasp a little while ago and I think some kind of recluse type spider got my foot a few months ago (not the really bad kind, but enough that there is still a bit of a sore on my foot 3 months later)

had some close calls with black widows too recently, went to pick something up and stopped the motion of my hand an inch or two away from one that was sitting in a small web right beside it, and almost put my leg into one that was sitting on a web close to the ground beside a wall..... definitely do not need the week long flu that comes with getting bit by a black widow

Boozer 06-22-2009 09:51 AM

local exterminators like terminex dont do shit for scorpions. Go down to your local bug and weed mart and pick up a bottle of cy kick. Now that shit works and works on contact.

PPjohn 06-22-2009 09:58 AM

damn man, feel good!

Easton 06-22-2009 10:04 AM

omg, i hope you're not suffering too much bro! god dayum that totally sucks

i fished out two dead ones from the bottom of my pool yesterday as a matter of fact

'tis the season :(

Robbie 06-22-2009 10:07 AM

Damn. We had some exterminators stop by the house soliciting business 3 weeks ago. We just moved here last Oct. They told me that the baby Scorpions were hatching and there would be a lot of activity.

I hired them on the spot. Wasn't sure if I needed 'em or not, but now I'm glad I did!

Relentless 06-22-2009 10:09 AM

I wouldnt feel comfortable with an exterminator that told me scorpions were "hatching"

StaceyJo 06-22-2009 10:15 AM

Creepy creatures. They are my enemy.

Atticus 06-22-2009 10:16 AM

As long as its a big one you're good. it's the little ones you have to watch out for. They cant control the poison and they let loose while the big guys just give you enough and then try to find safety.

The first one I found in my house I called our bug guy and he gave me a blacklight to find them at night. They glow a bright neon yellow under the blacklight (very freaky). I go out in the backyard about once a month and find 10+. Scary thing is they say for every one you find, 10 more you dont.

They probably didn't say that...just me paraphrasing. :)

DirtyDanza 06-22-2009 10:33 AM

Ive been nailed more times than I can count by those fuckers....

when I was a kid growing up here in the desert we used to catch them all the time.... along with black widows and rattle snakes...

never been nailed by a snake but spiders and scorpions I have been nailed many many times by...

Kenny B! 06-22-2009 10:38 AM

That sucks man hope you feel better soon, stop rolling around in sand!

SordidMedia 06-22-2009 10:38 AM

Thankfully, scorpion bites and other nasty bug attacks are not too common here (UK).

This like the little fucker that got you?

http://www.sordidmedia.com/bark-scorpion.jpg

I hope you`re feeling better soon mate.

JP-pornshooter 06-22-2009 10:43 AM

there was a special on one of the major networks a few years ago, it was all about "pain" and classifying pain in different categories.
the broadcaster actually subjected himself to get bitten/stung by bees, spiders and scorpions. as i recall scorpion was the most painful of all of them..

C-Luv 06-22-2009 10:47 AM

Yuck I hate scorpions!

Yeah I figured as much, just messing with you.

Truthfully though I have never seen any positive results from local exterminators. Finally I took it upon myself to try and resolve the issue.

First thing I did was remove all electrical plate covers and filled around the box with some of that expanding, insulating foam. Did the same with all of the celing fans. Went around the exterior of the house caulking any cracks and crevices.

Then I spread diatomaceous earth around the perimeter of the block wall. Then I spray cy kick around the perimeter of the house.

Bit of a over kill but the results have been fantastic.

Zuzana Designs 06-22-2009 11:17 AM

yikes that sounds horrible! I hope you are ok. I would have driven to the hospital lol.
I hate bugs of any kind.

Sebastian Sands 06-22-2009 11:18 AM

the pain is unreal, and the dizziness is on and off. I can't seem to sit still for too long, if I sit for 15 mins the pain seems to get worse, so I get up and walk around a bit and then sit down for a bit again, feel pretty restless... annoying as hell.

Sebastian Sands 06-22-2009 07:50 PM

feeling a lot better now, I am not dizzy anymore, It still hurts but i can tell it is less then it was this morning. So I should be completely back to normal in a day or so.

Thanks for all the kind words, it freaked me out this morning.

Sebastian

You are one tough person to just ride it out hun. I'm off to bed and will ALWAYS check my clothes when I wake up. Bugs fucking scare me. I'm glad you are doing better :thumbsup

niche25 06-22-2009 08:07 PM

No seriously I did kill one, I hope it was the same one that stung my nephew this weekend.

Hey man, sorry to hear you got stung - I hope you're better soon.

Just a quick :2 cents: to everyone though. Scorpions are arachnids, not insects. Also, taxonomically, within the Class Insecta which insects are members of [Spiders and Scorpions are in the Class Arachnida] there is an Order named Hemiptera which contains those insects called "True Bugs". I hope that serves as a bit of a disambiguation. :winkwink:

I don't expect everyone to share my interest in insects, but it is pertinent to note that humans would not be able to survive on Earth without them. :)

With all the displacement from construction there were/are lots of scorpion nests in Vegas. Had an ex girlfriend would find one in her house almost every day :Oh crap

collegeboobies 06-22-2009 08:22 PM

Thats why I'm glad I dont live in the desert. Anyway to keep them out of the house 100%?

cherrylula 06-22-2009 08:37 PM

Glad we don't have those littl' fuckers around these parts.

This is the closest we get to 'em.

NaughtyRob 06-22-2009 09:37 PM

WTF!? I have NEVER seen one of those in Vegas and have lived here since 2002. Yikes.

GrouchyAdmin 06-22-2009 09:39 PM

This side of NV, we have 'wind scorpions'. The infamous fucking camel spider. Creepy bastards.

Boozer 06-22-2009 09:43 PM

have a feeling its gone to be a bad year for scorpions this year. just went out and killed 2 of them on the block wall

I find them in my back yard all the time... I have a LED ultraviolet flashlight, I just wait till dark and me and my kid go 'hunting' - they glow bright bluish-green when the blacklight hits them, they are easy to spot.

There are so many in the back yard, one or two are going to find their way into the house sooner or later. Lots of palm trees here and everyone in my neighborhood has nice yards with sprinkler systems running every night, makes a nice habitat for the scorpions to live in and hunt for other bugs.
