Modern day things you suck at?

Yup, this will sound like an old biddy posting, I know.

Modern things that other people do with great ease but that you will admit to sucking at. For example, I am probably the slowest text message sender in the UK. Seriously, texting has been a requirement for life over here for nearly a decade now and I still hunt and peck with one finger and probably have to go back and correct a ton of what I write as I am writing it. I watch other people bang out a ton of text replies in the time it takes me to almost write one.

What modern day things like that do you suck at?

seeandsee 07-07-2009 07:12 AM

i suck at photoshop! :)

CaptainHowdy 07-07-2009 08:05 AM

Videogames...

Tom_PM 07-07-2009 08:31 AM

I havent needed to have a cell phone this millenia, so I doubt I'd be too quick texting from a non-standard keyboard.

Ross 07-07-2009 08:34 AM

I suck at being patient. I'm capable in most modern day things that I need to do or use. Anything else I don't then I don't see why I need to be good at it.

TurboAngel 07-07-2009 08:38 AM

I suck at the whole texting thing. My mom on the other hand has that shit down pat! LMAO

Managing this damned iPod.

Getting my sprinkler system to work right.

Seriously.. if I have 3 zones over 2 programs, not exactly a golf course. Zone 1 & 2 need to run on program A, and zone 3 on B. Zones 1 & 2 need to run for a few mins each half hour (I'm reseeding) and zone 3 for a half hour a couple times a day..

But apparently it's too much for me to handle :upsidedow

Martin 07-07-2009 09:24 AM

Video games. Then again I never play them so how would I know?

BradM 07-07-2009 09:25 AM

Technology.

Jakke PNG 07-07-2009 09:26 AM

I suck at finding interest in reality-tv, MTV and facebook.

I can sympathize. I have 6 zones and my water company is making a mint because I can't figure that thing out. But I have a very green lawn.

and the sad thing is the new generation of mechanic is totally reliant on the computer telling them what's wrong - took my car in a few months back to the dealer as it was making loud crackling noises from the engine whenever it was in gear. Mechanics told me after 2 days nothing is wrong. I opened up the hood, put it in gear and said
"hear that",
"yeah",
"that's not normal - last week it wasn't like that"
"computer says everything ok (shows me the printout)"
"screw the computer, my ears tell me there's something wrong"
"it's normal"
"bye"

took it to the local guy who's been there for eons, he listened, fiddled around and found a loose electrical connection sparking when the autobox engaged. Time 25 mins, cost a bottle of wine.

stupid computers!

Anyway, I'm hopeless at cooking. I have the recipes, I have the ingredients, what we eat is disgusting. I blame the cookery books, of course.

I always hit send prematurely.

Dude... that's way too much water! What do you live right next door to me? (It's 110 here)

And I suck at swimming. I started doing triathlons at 30 and thought I could "fake" the swim in just a sprint distance tri (1/4 mile swim, 9 mile bike, 3 mile run) and I nearly died in the water. Been learning to swim ever since but I am always way behind the pack and spend the whole rest of the race passing hundreds of people.

I'm forty and I'm still on top of things. However, I try hard at it. I can text; I love my cell phone with the clamshell and the full keyboard inside. Sweet. I have an Ipod, buy my music online.

The one thing that kicked my ass was the DVR. It sort of snuck up on me. This is the cable TV box that can record TV shows, similar to the Tivo. I had no interest in using it - I'm not a big tv person and I've lived for forty years with missing a TV show here and there. My daughter started using it and when I figured out how easy it was, well, I started using it too.

I'm good really.

I am horrible at video games. I kick ass at pinball and skee ball though.

Sarah, I can identify! I lived in London for a couple of years - that was my intro to texting, and my thumbs were all over the place. :)

Other modern day things I'm bad at include: using cars that have keyless entry, using sinks with motion sensors, figuring out the DVR.

I thought I was the only one who had problems using those motion sensor sinks. I can only imagine what people are thinking when I'm standing there flapping my hands like a seal underneath the faucet trying to get the water to start.

SilentKnight 07-07-2009 11:37 AM

I suck at remembering special occasions - birthdays, etc.

And according to the wife I suck at working the TV remote (new-fangled thing with a zillion function buttons).

That was pretty funny.

Oh yeah, this.

I can remember raising the hood of an Olds 442 and seeing nothing but the engine block and a distributor cap, right there in front of you where you could actually change the spark plugs easily.

Now there's just a giant mess of hoses, computer wires and it looks like its impossible to even work on without taking the whole thing apart.

Pretty sure swimming has been around for a while.
