Texting while bicycling?

I've been seeing this more and more lately, someone riding a bike one-handed while yakking on a cell or texting with the other. Have you seen this?

I don't see this ending well for anyone that does it.

I do it all the time but i ride rural routes. I dont think talking whilst on the phone is a distraction though not on a bike or in a car, texting is obviously.

In your case it's an exception. Once you get shmushed on the grill of someone's vehicle it'll be chocked up to culling the herd. :D

I may see 4 or 5 cars in an hour period. I dont have traffic to deal with, people crossings or stop lights.

I dont think may people actually stare at their phone whilst texting and riding anyway, most people know where the buttons are just like most people here could type perfectly well on their keyboards with their eyes closed. You would just take a quick glance down which is no different to driving your car and taking a quick glance at your passenger talking to you.

And nobody riding a bicycle is going to kill anybody because they were texting. Even if they were putting their own lives at risk that is thier choice.

fatfoo 07-18-2009 12:53 PM

Depends how skilled the person is at doing it, and what speed they are going at.

Yup pretty much. Not something that should be regulated. If people crash into a tree and drive off a bridge its their own fault.

Picture a vehicle going fast enough... You didn't hear it or see it because you're to distracted talking/texting someone on your cell.. The driver all of a sudden sees you at the last minute... slams his brakes, tries to avoid you, slams into another car or pedestrian..

Shit like this can happen. Saying that texting or talking on your cell while riding a bike is not distracting is a load of shit. I ride a bike and I have seen MANY doing this shit and they are in a whole other world like nothing is around them. I've seen a few almost get slammed by cars.. I would have laughed at the idiots. Oh, this was done on a busy downtown street with no bike lane.

Thats highly unlikely though if you are texting and riding it is very easy to keep the handle bars in line with one arm whilst quickly glancing for half a second down at your phone. Nobody needs to stare at their phone whilst texting... Eating and drinking whilst driving a car is far more distracting and that is legal.

gotta draw the line somewhere... if you don't, you could stretch it so the same logic would follow that crossing the street + talking on the phone is unsafe... and then might as well stretch it so that walking in general + talking on the phone is unsafe...

San 07-19-2009 08:09 AM

if you can't ride a bike without one hand you have issues

i can ride without both hands

The same way glance down briefly. Whilst you are glancing down you keep your arm straight and guess what? The bike stays straight. Just dont glance down near a crossing or turning and the only accident that is going to happen is if someone else drives into you due to their own error, which is what happens in 99% of accidents involving bicycles...

So long as your eyes are in good working order you do not need to stare at your phone whilst you type a message. Im sure there are some people who do, but i doubt these are the type to text whilst riding.

I wonder how many of you think this should also be illegal...

If riding a bike and texting is dangerious "at all" then so is having your earphones on and listen to your ipod.

At that, we need tot ban walking with headphones. Like they already do for people driving cars. A person walking may not hear a car jump onto the sidewalk, and bam...

Heck.. If that's the case, we should ban talking to other people at any point. Just think, a person walking and talking may not see something too!

That's it, it's bike safety hats, sun glasses, knee pads and an anal plug for everyone!

I did a quick search on that. It seems there are places that are seriously looking into possibly regulating that very thing, texting while walking.

Yngwie's point is valid though, but those who defend biking and text/talking aren't ever going to get it.

...until they get hit. :batman

It's safe to say the mass majority ride a bike in safe enough places that getting hit isn't going to happen. For me, a car would have to jump a 5 foot wide curb, go on to a 10 foot wide bike lane, and me still not see them some how.

If this is about safety then nobody under 21 should be allowed on a cell phone, period. It's a safety hazard to developing brains.

I watched that yesterday, saw it when I was searching out links for this thread.

That guy is talented. He's got a deathwish, but he's definitely talented.

It takes no talent whatsoever to do that, just massive balls.
