I fucking hate domainers

So I'm trying to find a domain for a new site I'm starting. Of the 80 names I considered, 63 were taken by domainers.

On a related note: if anyone has a good politics-related domain, please leave the name, your asking price and contact info in this thread.

OrangeContent 07-27-2009 11:40 PM

Sucks but that's what they do lol.

Raf1 07-27-2009 11:42 PM

well that's just the way that it is :)

Libertine 07-27-2009 11:46 PM

I wish prices on domain registration were just raised to something like $500 a year...

If the domain is not developed, check the whois and make the owner an offer...half the time you will get lucky and they will sell for a decent amount.

Also check the drop lists, what I do when searching domains in the whois...I make a list of ones that are expiring soon, then try back ordering the domain, and you might just get it.

Looking at your avater pic, if your looking for a Japanese niche domain...sorry I have most of the good ones....good luck. :thumbsup

Send me an email Libertine. Be more specific as to the "political" domain your looking for.
Is it for a particular party or person, or rather a cause.

Hate the game, don't hate the...

The only alternative is "communism", where you have to appear before the ICANN high counsil and present your 'business plan' before you are allowed to register a domain... ;)

Libertine leave some contact info and I'll hit you up.

I've been doing that for a while now. Seems to work decently enough. Have backordered a few and got lucky.

I feel ya! Every time I go to look for domains, 75% of them are registered and PARKED...yup, parked. Nothing on them and not being monetized. Worthless, absolutely worthless. But hey, domains should be considered at internet real estate.

Yeah really sux that somehow people decided to buy assets with value before you thought of it. Also, some other folks snapped up all those A-Rod rookie cards too. Fucking assholes. They should just give them all to me 'cuz I have a *real* use for them.

True besides if you are willing to pay 500/per domain you could probably buy most of those 63 that are taken. I hate it as well when I see a great name going unused but everybody's got to make a buck.

No, what sucks is that an extremely limited commodity that is essential to doing business online was given out to people for a negligible payment, in unlimited amounts, on a first-come-first-served basis.

Someone who registers them in bulk and only sells at high prices only has to sell 1 in every 100 or so to turn a small profit. And therein lies the problem: it's simple and inexpensive to keep hundreds or even thousands of domains occupied but undeveloped.

I've profited from the system myself, and probably own more domains than most people in this thread. But that doesn't make it a good system.

You could compare the internet to a city in that regard: if land allocation works in such a way that a majority of worthwhile land is taken but undeveloped, the system is broken.

Regardless of how they are "given out" (or sold) the market is going to find the correct price for these assets. With high reg/renewal fees, then the surplus goes to the registry (a monopoly with a very limited technical set of things to do; flooding them with money would be a VERY BAD thing and still not ensure availability (see the case of .mobi)). Also, high prices would lock out millions of people who might only be interested in a domain at $10 or less, like your average blogger.

Low reg/renewal fees mean the surplus goes to those who are smart and quick, and those willing to take risks. As others have mentioned, most domainers are willing to sell if the price is right.

gwidomains 08-05-2009 08:00 AM

You are right, domains are essentially a "public resource" whose value was created by U.S. tax dollars in the initial stage. However, after that creation rather than being properly allocated via an auction on the names, the names were treated as though all names have the same value.

Clearly they do not.

So, like when radio spectrum was just given away rather than auctioned many many many domainers and companies got great deals at the expense of the general public.

Verisign being the most egregious case -- they have gotten fat over the past 12? years with providing a commodity at ridiculously high prices with zero competition.

Anyway, you are right, domains should be auctioned (as they are in most new gtlds / cctlds that open), dropped domains should NOT be the property of the registrar they drop with, but go back to a transparent open auction system -- with the revenue used to sustain ICAN rather than taxes on names or subsidies from governments.

Your not alone I bet most who have a domain name wished they owned a better one, I would love to own Japanesegirls.com and Handball.com for fun, and Business.com so I could retire.

I started messing around with the internet in the early 90's and many did not know including myself where the whole concept was going. I remember checking yahoo stock quotes and Angelina Jolie photos...and also ran into a lot of early porn websites. In fact many successful companies had registered their domain names before they even thought of the generic one word domains that would have automatically made their business a success.

In the late 90's people invested big in domains thinking that it would be easy to make millions on the net, then you had the internet bubble that bursted. Once this happened many people dropped tons of domains, this is when many domainers jumped in and purchased tons of names. We know now that you can make money on the net but not everyone has a success story. You know the examples...Google, yahoo, ebay, amazon, myspace, youtube, etc.

As far as the future goes I think the internet will be around for a while since so much money is invested in it. It is barely 20 years old. As far as all the good domains (online real estate) taken, it would be the same as you trying to buy beach front real estate....it is all taken. If you want it you need to pay the asking price. I do feel that all these other extensions are hurting the internet, it should have stayed .com, .net, and .org only. These were universal, then all the country codes came out...and who the hell ever would type in a .info or .me. :2 cents:

Spot on Jim.

It'll be interesting to see the bids at Sedo Auction beginning soon. They seem to be a bit hung up on short names (like in non adult) rather than good names.

There are domains Estibot lists at $100 but are listed because they are short. And I know there are domains listed at 20,000 that were longer than say 8 chars that were rejected. Now ok Estibot isn't the say all but that is a big diff.

For example: (made up domains)

Is tinyporn.net better than freepornpictures.com

One is short and one is a winner in peddling porn.
I'm not real impressed with what I see.

So we'll see.
